This is cool, my favorite discount broker, Charles Schwab, has now lowered their online stock trading commission to $8.95. That's not the cheapest but it's pretty good, and I've always thought Schwab has an excellent web platform, better than the others I've tried, IMHO.

Hmm, I have sharebuilder and I purchase shares of 22 stocks on a monthly basis for 22 (20.00 plan for 20 stocks+ 1.00 a stock after that)bucks a month. I love it so far as it saves me quite a bit of cash.

I just signed up with Zecco to get the 10 free trades a month. I figure I would use the 10 free trades for anything I can't purchase monthly via sharebuilder (like B shares)

Kev have you tried Zecco? what did you not like about them?

I've never tried Zecco. I've used Schwab, TD Waterhouse (before it was TD Ameritrade) and Scottrade. They're all OK but Schwab has always seemed to me to be the easiest to use.

Worth pointing out that now Schwab has a line of index ETFs, and you can buy those commission free at Schwab. Great deal.

Wouldn't matter for small trades but fyi execution info from their sites

-->Schwab (effective/quoted 93%, lower is better; Nasdaq price improved 77%; avg execution 0.1s)

Zecco (effective/quoted is 105%; price improved for 59%; avg execution 1.07s)

Scottrade (price improved for 80-82%, no info on effective/quoted, avg execution 0.4s)

I don't think anyone is being robbed except maybe by Ameritrade. I tried Scott and they didn't have check writing and had been with TD for a long time and then Ameritrade started jerking me and found out just how incompetent they were and switched to Fidelity when they offered 100 free trades and $8.00 trading and they paid real interest when I switched not like Ameritrade. Many discounts don't offer 401K's at least when I was looking so it all depends what a person seeks whether they are being robbed or not. Although most don't have access to private trading lines in NH & OH at Fidelity I like the personal service they offer since they show that they appreciate a nobody like me. Cannot say that about Ameritrade who tried to impress me that I was just a nobody, but then many local employees didn't even have internet service at home so I was less and less impressed with them.
