I'm new to these boards so please forgive my ignorance!

I'm in the process after a couple of REALLY rough years of feeling helpless about credit and debt... not realizing that I could do things like dispute information in my file and actually improve my rating without the help of an attorney or credit repair agency....

Anyway, I pulled my three reports recently and was surprised to see a collection item from an agency for a medical bill in the amount of $1000+. I had visited an ER when I broke my foot a few years back, and I was insured at the time. I actually had fantastic insurance and at most my copay should have been about $75. I'd never heard from the hospital OR this collection agency. I called the hospital and was told that they had no insurance information on file, and that they had sent me a bill back in 2004 to an address where I didn't live and they insist that I owe them the money.

I tried calling the insurance company I had at the time and now they've split and reorganized and so on and so forth and they have no access to my old insurance information, and I don't have a copy of the card or anything.

Do I have any recourse in disputing this items? Is there some kind of loophole in HIPPA or anything I can stand on?

ANy advice from anyone who's had success in disputing medical items would be greatly appreciated!
