I've had an account with them for a while, not a full member, but I added my father to my profile, who is retired military. Unfortunately, just because he's retired military doesn't mean I can get full membership. They said he had to have a product first before I'd be eligible. I really wanted to get a quote on auto insurance with them...dangit!

I think another poster commented on this previously because USAA doesn't tell people this outright. In the insurance context, there is a difference between "full members" (officers and I think spouses) and the lesser "associate members" (like kids of members) who can buy insurance.

 

True full members have a subscriber savings account, get insurance through the actual Association, and can get a big annual return of premium (I'll call it a distribution of profit without the tax).

 

Kids (like me) can get insurance through companies like the CIC, and our annual dividend is based, I think, solely on auto policy premiums (not that I'm complaining). I suspect that we (kids) support some of the profit sharing in the Association.

 

I have no evidence to support this, but my gut tells me that the bank treats full and associate members differently, not to mention the third tier members (the general public) who appear to be treated as chopped liver for rates and rewards.

I wouldn't get to wrapped around the axle with USAA. Their loan rates and insurance are stellar, however after that all bets are off. I'm a full member too!

My father is a retired officer and USAA member, and I've been a member for like 20 years. So far as I can tell, I'm a "full member," having had an auto policy with the from the start, along with two credit cards later on . . .
