If I buy a car with either cash or money orders, does the dealer have reporting requirements to the government? I am asking because of the currency transaction reporting requirements and the new anti terrorism laws. I get paid frequently in cash or money orders, or cashiers checks, so thought I might just use them instead of a check.

What are the amounts before it has to be reported, and are money orders treated the same as cash?

And yes, before you ask, I do report all of my income on my taxes.

This is not going to be a new car, so I will not be walking in with $20,000 or $30,000 in small bills.

money orders and or travelers checks. (our interpretation)

Same thing will happen to you if you deposit that money directly in your bank account.

Is not a form YOU have to sign or anything.
