My husband and I are dealing with these scumbags on an old apartment. The balance has ballooned over $200 in interest and whatever else they are adding on. I found out recently that this is illegal in my state if the CA doesn't have a legal entitlement to do so. This CA has been unable or unwilling to provide me with a copy of my lease in the past, which is the only thing which would tell if they are legally allowed to do this or not, so I'm going to assume they are not (but I do know what they say about assumptions). I will try to get a copy of this lease myself, but otherwise, I'm trying to figure out the best course of action. Thoughts?

I've had a really hard time with those guys. Also from an apartment. Over the past 3 years they've charged about $1,000 in interest, and are reporting to the bureaus incorrectly to where it's more detrimental to my credit score. I pursued them through the BBB which got nowhere, the State Attorney General wouldn't touch it, and I've spoken to 2 different lawyers who both said that it wouldn't be worth pursing in court. Despite several FDCPA violations, apparently unless there's obvious, provable monetary damages that they've caused you, lawyers don't want to waste their time.

I'm going to keep attacking the tradeline through different dispute tactics, but I've seen many on here who found that these guys stick like glue..

These guys are on my reports for an apartment as well. I haven't yet done anything as they're one of the higher amounts on the report and I don't want to poke them yet. Keep us posted because your experience could be helpful to others, including myself. Unfortunately im going to leave the advice to the experts here.

Bumping in hopes that someone can help. Perhaps send a letter to them stating that their continued negligence to address your inquiries has led you to forward all communications you've had with them to the bbb and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau? Then send copies of all communications with them to those agencies?

I reported it to the BBB but they won't even take the complaint unless I send a written statement saying that they are released from legal liability, as is the CA. I'm unwilling to do that. I've never had to sign anything like that from the BBB.

The BBB is in their pocket.

One problem, when I go to the CFPB and click on "file a complaint", there's nothing on there related to collection agencies. Has anyone filed a complaint with them against a CA?

By the way, I got a copy of my lease today, and there is NOTHING in there indicating that the collection agency has any right to collect interest or fees, so at least I have that in my favor.

CFNB has a mailing address under the "contact us" section. I recommend sending a very clear to read account of what happened and wait for the response.
