I applied for a checking account with a credit union online and was denied but didn't know the reason. Today I received a letter stating that the reason was because of information in Chex systems. I was not aware that I had been reported to Chex and I was not sure why, until I remembered that I was on a joint account with someone who filed bankruptcy. I had not used the account in a while so I did not know the status of it. Apparently the story is that the account holder had a line of credit and a credit card with the credit union and when they started to miss payments, the credit union tried to take money out of the checking account to put towards the payments but there was not enough money in the account, so the checking account was overdrawn. The account holder ended up filing bankruptcy. I have read on this forum that the account holder can be removed from checks by faxing them the discharge papers, but what about me? Will I be removed from chex once they are removed?

I don't think they will remove you if you were not part of the bankruptcy. They will still consider you to be responsible for the joint account
