I convinced my brother that he needed something more to his finances than what his local bank was giving him, so I told him to join Alliant and piggyback off of my name. That went all and well, Alliant let him join and took his initial deposit.

Except one problem.

Alliant wouldn't allow him to open a checking account. I can't exactly say why. He has a thin file; essentially the only things reporting are some student loans in deferment. That won't be a problem for now; we're going to have him save money over the summer and deposit all of his income and college refunds into the Alliant savings account (for the high interest rate), and then have it send out about $600 or so a month to his local bank checking account. Not too much of a problem, but it would have been nice to convert all of his deposit products to Alliant.

My only questions are: Why would Alliant deny a checking account? What would he need to do in order to qualify for one in the future? Would it require another hard on EQ?

Yeah, look for a paid ChexSystems derog. If it were unpaid they would have denied membership.

No derogatories on Chex. It specifically said that he was being denied based on items on his Equifax report. Which, the only item reporting on his Equifax report would be his deferred student loans.

This happened to my brother as well. I told my brother to call them and ask and he was told that there was something wrong with their system and it's almost impossible to get denied for a checking, unless your chex is bad. Have you guys tried calling alliant? It's probably an error like what had happened with my brother.

That was my next step, so it's good to hear that it's not just him. We'll give them a call next week and see what they can do for us. Thanks for your experience.

Did your brother call them? Was he able to open a checking account? I want to open one, maybe I can qualify for a savings account right now. I don't have anything bad on my Chex, but the CR's have my recent BK of April 2012.

Similar thing happened to me. I signed up online and they approved the savings but denied the checking, 1 hard pull on EQ. Called in the same day and the CSR said she checked over my chexsystems and didn't find anything that would prevent me from opening the checking and said I should fax in the paper enrollment form but to put a note that they should use the same pull as my savings account. Good news is 2 days later the checking account was added, bad news is a 2nd EQ hard pull also. Called and they said they can't do anything about the pulls Posted Image

He did. They ended up telling him that he didn't ever request the checking account and told him to add it online via Alliant's add account feature. 5 minutes later, his checking account was opened. Whatever. :P
