I looked at my credit report today and never paid much attention to the reporting of my student loans. I mean, it's the government - they should be accurate was my thinking up until about five years ago (now I know better).

I have read all over this forum that you can't dispute lates on a student loan credit report "because they're required by law to report correctly" and getting them changed is pretty much impossible. However, what if you are reasonably certain they reported inaccurately?

For example, I show a 60 day late in 2007, a 60 day late in 2006, and in 2005 a 60 day, 90 day and 3 120 day lates. In 2004 I show a 60, 90, and 2 120 day lates. During 2004 & 2005 I was in school. During 2006-2007 I was in hardship deferrals and forbearances each for a year. I returned to school in 2009, took a semester off this spring and will be attending again in 2010.

So if someone wanted to dispute the lates, how would you go about it? I understand it's not the same as with consumer credit reporting. One post mentioned a goodwill letter but I'm not sure how I would even word such a letter (know how for credit cards but this is different). My memory could certainly be flawed so is it possible to request verification of those lates? I find it hard to believe I was late that much and every year. I consolidated in 2007 and since then no lates have been reported. I'm almost wondering if some of my loans (when they were unconsolidated) didn't get a proper status to show they were in deferral and I just never knew about it because I wasn't monitoring my credit report then.

I welcome any suggestions or if there is a resource I should look at, please point me in the right direction (please don't direct me to read - as I already have been trying my best to do my own due dilligence).

Thanks very much for helping me deal with this confusing and complicated area.

With your being in and out of school, lates are quite possible if you didnt file deferment papers on time. A lot of student dont seem to understand they only get one 6 month grace period when leaving school and often wait too long to file for deferment.

It is pretty late to be disputing lates in 2004, considering they will drop off next year. You can try but I wouldnt be too hopeful.

I'm really more concerned about 2005 & 2006. I understand what you're saying about the deferments but I've worked really hard to stay on top of that. The rest of my credit was a disaster until about 2006-2007 when I started getting on top of it so it's certainly possible. So I just really want to double check and have someone say, "Yes, you were late, and here's why". How would I go about doing that? Is it a similar letter for the credit report verifications? "I saw this late on my report and I don't believe I was ever late"?

Thanks!

OMG - I disputed on TU and they all went away! The account shows no lates now! WOOT! Now if the others will only do that I'll be looking good!

How did you dispute the lates with TU?

I'm interested in knowing the answer to this as well.
