I'm just in the early stages of CR, and I was looking over the personal section of my EX when i noticed they mentioned that an "alternate" SS# was being reported for me, saying that it was being reported by at least one of my creditors. It is nearly identical to mine.

For example, mine is XXX-66-XXXX, the alternate is XXX-55-XXXX.

Now, here is my dilemma. The obvious thing to do would be to send them a copy of my SS card and ID to prove it is false.

However, I have a sinking feeling I know why it is being reported and who it is being reported by.

In 2001, when I was married, my then-husband worked F&I for a Mazda car dealership. I traded in my car and he did the paperwork for me to buy a new minivan. I just had to come in and sign the papers, which I did.

I think he put the wrong social on the application. :) I also think he listed the wrong birth year for me, since an incorrect birthdate is also being reported as an "alternate" on EX. I do not know whether this was intentional on his part or not. It would not surprise me if he did this intentionally without my knowledge. He is a shady dude. This could be an honest but very careless mistake on his part as well. I just don't know.

Anyway, the reason I'm pretty sure that it is being reported by Mazda is that I now recall a conversation with a rep while i was still paying on the loan in which I had to give my SS# to verify my account number (to make a payment) and she said something like, "That's weird, we have XXX-55-XXXX as your social." I did not think much of it then, but NOW I'm concerned that I may have unwittingly particpated in some type of credit fraud. :-(

Should I still dispute this with EX? I REALLY don't want to get in trouble for this. I also don't want an erroneous SS# attached to my CRAs. (It is only on EX, though). The loan was paid off in 5/25. Don't know if that matters.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

if this is a TL on your report, and a negative one, then dispute away and get it removed.

first verify with the CRAs your information (first step in credit repair) and get your name/address/social corrected. then dispute the TL as being someone else's social.

if it's a positive TL, or you need the AA then just leave it be and dispute the SS# information.

EX did the same thing with my SS number -- they had two alternates listed. I simply sent in a letter stating the correct one and that the others were not mine and the other two were removed with no hassle (I know, odd for Experian :) )

My only fear is that EX will go back to Mazda (who I'm pretty sure is the creditor reporting the incorrect SS#), who will pull my original app. and then *I'll* get in trouble for using an incorrect social on a loan app. -- even though I did not put it there.

OK, so I'm probably paranoid, but I don't want my first step in fixing my credit repair to land me in the pokey for fraud!

Especially if it's a 5/6 issue, I don't think there would be any problem.

That's easily explained by misreading someone's writing. People's writing gets really odd when they have to squish it into those little boxes they put for the social.

5/6 7/9 etc.

You didn't do it intentionally. Fraud usually requires intent.

Mazda Finance isn't going to pull your application and look at it. Even if they still had it, they don't care.

Thank you for your reply. This man did a substantial amount of damage to mine and my kids' lives and I'm trying to get it all sorted out. I just didn't want to go to jail while doing that.
