I don't know which would be the best board for this question, so I am sorry if I chose the wrong one.

I recently bought the domain name 4crazykids.com that I had planned on using for our family's website. So far I just bought the name and I haven't set it up yet.

I have an email from someone who wants to know my asking price for the domain name.

Any ideas what to ask for? I mean, hey.. if I can make a few bucks and pick out a new domain for my family's site it's not really a big deal. I am not attached to it, is what I am trying to say.

Any ideas? I am lost.

Thanks!

Melissa

Valuing a domain is far from an exact science. I would be wary about any terms, maybe they received your name & email from a list of recent registrants and are just phishing for more information?

Yeah, I'm a pessimist, lol. I have purchased business/product related domain names for as much as $500 however. I wouldn't imagine that 4crazykids.com is worth much at all personally, I don't see much business value anyways.

I wouldn't think it would be worth much, either. That's why I was just going to use it as my family website.

Interesting idea about the phishing. I own a few more domain names and I just have them parked for now. (future use) This is the only one that I am having hosted... so they most likely got the info from godaddy. I think I will just send them a note saying I am not interested.

Thanks for the reply!

I've had a gazillion names, some of them I've never done anything with, and I get all kinds of junk mail and such labeled to the domain name, so someone's buying and selling the info.

Yeah, unless you're talking hundreds, it's probably not worth your time.

Well I did a little 'googling' and found my answer. Apparently this scam goes like this:

you get an email asking for your selling price

once you reply, they reply saying that they need you to get the name "appraised" at some company they actually own.(they don't tell you they own it)

Once you pay for the "appraisal" you never hear from them again.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me libmom, it's kind of a part of the web experience sadly it seems. Of the 30 or so items I've sold on Ebay, I've had one nigerian account hijacker waste my time, and 3 non-paying bidders... that's like 10%+.

Daddy's right, craigslist is like the wild wild west, lol, I only deal face-to-face, cash & locally only for Craigslist stuff I've sold.

Ok, I didn't want to do it but I have to bring some paranoia into this thread...

...how easy is it to find out the ownership info for domain names. I only ask because we all know those dirty scumbag JDB's and CA's sometimes lurk and if they see a member post about a domain they own they might try to find the ownership info, read past postings, and use information posted by them on CB against them.

If anyone knows more than me about this maybe they can chime in. If it's easy to find ownership info maybe a mod should edit or remove the thread.

Just a paranoid thought

HA! I totally didn't even think about this. The answer is YES, it is very possible and very easy. It's also completely legal and public information. For example, since your post reminded me it was possible, I looked up liberalmommy's domain, found her full name, address, e-mail, and phone number. From there I typed in her address in Google Earth and I'm zoomed in and looking at a blurry image of her house right now. Nice neighborhood. If I were a JDB I'd definitely start harassing her. :P I did all this in less than a minute. I suppose a CA or JDB would be able to cross-reference this with her account numbers and SSN to see if there's a match and it would be a lot easier to start trying to collect. Yuck.

Creeped out enough? Well take heart, I'm a good person, so I'm not the bad guy here. But there's a bazillion out there who are. Anyway, there's such a thing as "private domain registration" where a third party (like a company who does this as their job) will replace your private information with their company's name, address, and phone number. Your information stays safe. I know when I got my domain name I opted for this feature (like an extra $1-2 nowadays or sometimes free). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I'd almost say it's mandatory if you're registering a domain name as a private person. If you're registering in your company name and business address, then it's not a bad thing in that case.

Well, crap! How can I edit out my domain name?

I recently had that 'problem' with an unused domain that I've had for years (that's rather specific). They told me to name my price, I said $5,000, they said ok. I should have asked for more, heh. Anyways, their lawyer drafted the transfer contract and acted as an escrow agent and I had a check FedEx'd two days later and the domain was in their hands. Just a success story to keep you motivated. Aim high, all that can do is say no. It's basically free money.

Cheers
