Here's my situation: Decided to buy a car. Ran free credit report to see what to expect. I called an 800 # that allowed my dealer to run a credit check. My dealer came back with figures and I signed a Sales Installment Contract (but that's another story) -- all of this on 2/19. On 2/21 a FedEx envelope was delivered to my home with a "blank" check from RoadLoans (with a substantially higher interest rate and no option to choose the length of the loan -- 72 months for all loans).

I then myself filled out an on-line credt app with Capital One Auto Finance -- no fuss, no muss, approved (did this late evening on 2/21 AFTER I received the FedEx from RoadLoans). Went back to my dealer and said I had my own financing and LO AND BEHOLD -- the dealer told me he could beat COAF interest rate and did (said somebody owed him a favor (ugh). Anyway, I talked with the dealer and they totally deny that they sent any credit info to RoadLoans.

The dealer said the 800# might be selling my info (which he said they're not supposed to do). Asked repeatedly if I had filled out any other online credits apps (which I haven't). The dealer said he submitted my info only to two other lenders: Bank of America and Citizens Auto Finance.

Why did RoadLoans send me a check? How did they get my info? Was it from running my credit report? But then, how did they know I was in the market just that DAY to buy a used car. And why was it sent FedEx? I remember when filling out paperwork, the salesman was very intent to get my PHYSICAL address (like they knew I'd be getting something FedEx), but the dealer totally denies any involvement.

I'm baffled and don't know whether to be concerned about identity theft . . . Any help / ideas / advice would be greatly appreciated. TYIA

That is probably where roadloans got your info. More than likely the website was a lead generation site and the 800# more than likely was not the number of your dealer. This is common among a lot of the online sites.

The dealer said the 800# might be selling my info (which he said they're not supposed to do).The site you were on probably had a disclaimer stating they would share your info with their partners and or affiliates Asked repeatedly if I had filled out any other online credits apps (which I haven't). The dealer said he submitted my info only to two other lenders: Bank of America and Citizens Auto Finance.

I would not worry about ID theft. You were just entered into a lead generating system.

Also, the reason the dealer asked for physical address was because it is required on credit app and has a lot to do with complying with the patriot act[/color]

Thanks for the feedback. That makes some sense, but I wasn't on any websites (except for the COAF credit app -- after I received the FedEx) -- I called an 800 number and there was no disclosure of sharing info. My dealer said that 800 number is specifically designated to just their dealership. I kind of thought it might be this 800 number, but the dealer was very adamant that they should NOT have used the information except to inform the dealership that I authorized ONLY the dealer to run a credit check.

Cap One Auto Finance has a partnership with Road Loans.

I know Cap One forwarded my info to Road Loans when I did not get approved.

Not sure why Cap One would forward your info when you were approved though.
