Forbearance

After rehabbing my student loans, my new lender sent me payment info with my first payment due on 2/1/08.

 

I decided to sign up for the graduate payment plan and submitted the paperwork. So now everything is complete and I see my payment is now due 3/1/08. However I also noticed that my loans were place in forbearance (not at my request). My plan was to make a February payment as soon as I found out what my new monthly payment would be.

 

My question is what effect this will have on my credit report? The lender is telling me that they still report my account as current and this has no impact, but I've read elsewhere that being in forbearance can lower my credit score.

I've never heard of Forbearance lowering your credit score...

DH's student loans have been in forbearance since May 2006 and have reported as paid on time but if you don't pay the interest it'll add onto the loan and the balance will be higher than the high balance.

I've had a forbearance on my vehicle payment a few times now and it never effected my scores.

When my husband's first student loan got out of rehab, the month after we weren't required to make a payment, so although I sent a payment on 11/1/07, they didn't apply it to November, but instead to the December payment that was due (I told them this was ok, as it was Christmas time and it was nice to not have to make a payment). But, there will be interest added for that time period, of course.

 

I don't believe it will affect your credit score at all.
