I have 2 Defaulted Student Loans (Direct Loans) on my credit reports.

The 1st loan was opened in December of 2000 and is paid off. Will that drop in December of this year since it will have been 7 years?

The 2nd loan was also opened December of 2000, but I still owe about $3000 on it. Will it drop off even if I still owe on it? If not, would it drop off if I paid it off before the end of the year?

These are the only negatives still on my reports other than a bad check in 2001.

Thanks for your time.

What do you mean opened?? Reporting generally goes for 7 years from the "claim paid date".

Not sure, that is the term used on my TrueCredit Reports

Opened: 12/04/2000 12/2000 12/2000

On the Loan Servicing Website, it shows my loan disbursements took place from Oct. 95 thru Mar. 97.

I was last in school in April of 1997.

What is the "Paid Claim Date"? OK - I found out what the "Paid Claim Date" is after a little searching, but is there a way that I can find out what that date is?

Thanks again.

It would be shortly after you defaulted. You defaulted after 270 or more days of continuous delinquency.

Well from what one of the CSRs at the Dept of Ed told me, a student loan collection is like any other collection in that lates would be removed after seven years, and collection accounts would be removed from your credit report seven years from the time that they became delinquent as well if they have been paid. This was true for a loan of mine which I defaulted on then later paid off. It was removed 7 years after the default date and not from the date that I paid it off.

Thanks, hopefully that means I will see them drop off by early next year.
