Notice many of the best funds come from companies that aren't talked about much? Smartmoney seems to like Trowe Price, Vangaurd showed up in a lot of catagories also. Fidelity didn't seem to have much of a showing though. Oakmark did really well for a small fund shop.

I've looked at oakmart before but haven't bought from them. I might send a little their way this year.

There seemed to be a common thread that "buy and hold" outperformed the rapid-turnover funds. I'm glad to see them looking at that; turning over the portfolio too frequently not only runs up the commission expenses, but it means your gains are mostly short-term. The latter is OK for IRAs and 401(k)s but not for account funded with after-tax dollars. We just got hit with huge distributions on our funds this year (yes, I know that's a great problem to have) and it's almost all dividends and long-term capital gains.

 

There was no mention of any of the funds that charge front-end loads such as American Funds, but I guess that's because if you factor in the maximum 5.75% load on Class A shares, it takes awhile for better investment results to offset that charge.
