Ok. Here is the problem. I have a friend and I do her taxes for her online using Turbo tax. Well she changed jobs last year and only has her last check stub. She wants me to do her taxes and submit them tomorrow (1st day of e-filing this tax season)because she needs a downpayment for her car....BUT she doesn't know the federal tax id #!! I know that if she doesn't have it I won't be able to do it. Is there anyway to find out the tax id # of a company? She is stressing me (that's what I get for saying yes when asked - trying to be a good friend). :)

TIA

Well, as her friend, you may want to tell her that she really should have her W-2 in hand before filing. Otherwise she may have to file an ammendment and that's just a big waste of your time and hers.

Hi Just!

If your friend knows the name of the corporation that she worked for........the corporate EIN may be online at your state's "Secretary of State" website. Incorporated businesses are required to file annual reports. The EIN is usually on the reports.

Hope that helps!

Take care,

Skipper

Thank you~

I will check out the site and see if I can find it for her. The company that she works for is a major company so hopefully it is there.

:yahoo:

Plan B is to find her last years return and see if she kept the extra W-2s for that employer..... Whatever works.... <_<

Take care,

When e-filing wasn't so popular, but still was available to individuals, I would ask my friends why on earth they'd pay H&R Block/Jackson Hewitt, etc so much money to file their taxes and get the RAL when they could have their return DD'd into their account in such a short time for $15 e-filing themselves...

Yeah, well, let's just say I don't say a word anymore because some people deserve to pay that outrageous fee (even people I like) and those preparers deserve that fee amount for putting up with them when they want their tax refund <_<

Doesn't Turbo Tax have an option to search for employer info for you? I would try that.

I plan on filing without a w2 possibly so I can get my refund back fast (EIC). Same employer as last year, and I don't want to wait for the money. I need it for closing costs if we buy a house.

I know I risk having to amend, but so? Then again I'm not bugging anyone else to do it for me either. Been doing my own taxes for decades, even when they were semi-complicated, because I'm cheap! LOL!

I tried to search for her employer using Turbo tax but they were unable to find her employer info. I gave up searching last night and will try again today. She always filed before without the w-2 because she was with the same company but since she switched jobs this time, that is the problem.

OK! I found it on the companys website and thier annual report! Thanks all.... Now I can be done with her until next year!

now you just have to make sure that the EID is the correct one. if the company is large enough they would have several subsidiaries and more than one EID. very common with large corporations.
