My job has been laying off ppl left to right, and we just got a memo saying that they have cancelled life insurance and disability. Until I get another job, what does this mean to me? I mean I'm a CSR, but it is a warehouse and I pack things sometimes. I've already said to myself I refuse to lift anything over 15 lbs. thanks to this (been hit by a van from behind before). I may try to avoid downstairs PERIOD (they drive forklifts). Should I just chill? I already feel like a rat on a sinking ship...

PS yes the job search has already begun.

Life insurance only really matters if you have any beneficiaries that you support.

Disability, on the other hand, is nice because if you become medically disabled (either short or long term) it pays a portion of your salary for a period of time, while you are at home recovering.

wouldn't workman's comp cover you if ya got hurt on the job?

Life insurance only "matters" if ya got people ya support IMHO and can be purchased AFAIK outside the employer. Disability insurance would be nice but I'm not sure it's a necessity as I've heard some employers' don't ever offer it.

angeleyes is right- Workers' Comp covers you for on-the-job injuries and they can't drop that or they'd go to jail. But it doesn't hurt to be cautious anyway. If you need to look for another job it will be easier to get hired if you don't come in wearing a cast!
