Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

 

South Carolina Sales or Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

Sales and use tax at the rate of 5% of the full purchase price less value of TRADE-IN, or $300.00 maximum, whichever is less. Residents required to pay on vehicles purchased out-of-state. CREDIT is allowed for Use Tax paid to these states with the exception of: AK, AR, De, DC, IA, IN, KY, MD, MS, MT, NV, NH, NM, NC, OK, OR, SD, VA, WV. However, additional tax is due if the amount paid to these states does not meet the minimum tax due in South Carolina. NEW RESIDENT residing in South Carolina, with vehicle previously registered in another state is EXEMPT. MILITARY PERSONNEL who are not a resident of this state may submit an Affidavit of Domicile from their commanding officer and upon approval may be EXEMPT from sales tax. Individual pays taxes on sales to dealer of the Department of Motor Vehicles. When a customer receives TWO vehicles from dealer for their ONE vehicle on an even trade, and no money changes hands, no taxes are due.
