Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

 

Nevada Sales or Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

There is a 6.50% to 7.5% sales tax (depending on county) on the purchase of a vehicle from a dealer. Sales tax paid on full purchase price with allowance for TRADE-IN. There is a 4.5% to 5.5% tax (depending on which county) on the purchase of a vehicle other than from a dealer. When a customer receives more than one vehicle on an even trade from a dealer, and no money changes hands,, 2% is the minimum use tax collected at the time of registering and titling. NO trade-in allowance granted on private party sales. For assistance with sales/use tax please contact the county.

 

GOVERNMENTAL SERVICES TAX (GST) – The annual amount of the tax is 4 cents on each $1.00, with an additional 1 cent per $1.00 in certain counties, valuation of the vehicle as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The GST is in lieu of property tax. Vehicles registered on the staggered system are registered for a period of twelve consecutive months due and payable on the first day of the registration year and another state. Credit IS ALLOWED for SALES TAXES paid in another state. Purchaser pays taxes to the dealer and to the Department of Motor Vehicle on private party sales and out-of-state purchases from a dealer.

 

NOTE: All motor vehicle must have mandatory insurance prior to registering. Exceptions: trailers.
