Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

 

Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

4% State sales or use tax, plus city and parish tax, if levied. CREDIT ALLOWED for state sales tax paid to another state provided that state grants Louisiana resident similar credit. CREDIT allowed for TRADE-INS when previously titled in Louisiana in the same name. NON_RESIDENT EXEMPT if vehicle is to be registered in their state of legal residence. MILITARY PERSONNEL are not EXEMPT unless proof can be submitted showing taxes paid to some other state. NEW RESIDENT with vehicle registered in another state must pay use tax. Taxes on sales are paid to the dealer or the Office of Motor Vehicles. When a customer receives more than one vehicle on an even trade from a dealer, and no money changes hands, no taxes are due.
