Idaho Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

Rate is 6% of the full purchase price. The amount subject to sales tax is reduced by the amount allowed for TRADE-IN vehicle if the vehicle is purchased from a licensed dealer (no trade-in allowed otherwise). CREDIT ALLOWED for sales or use tax paid in another state. If the state collects less than Idaho’s percentage then Idaho charges the difference up to Idaho’s 6%. MILITARY PEOPLE are not exempt from sales tax. NEW RESIDENT EXEMPT if vehicle titled and registered in another state 3-months before residing in Idaho. Idaho dealers collect tax on dealer sales. Idaho financial institutions recording liens generally collect tax on transactions other than Idaho dealer sales. County assessors collect tax on other sales. When two individuals enter into an even exchange and no money changes hands, sales tax is due on the full value of the vehicles. When an individual makes an even trade with a dealer, the individual is not required to pay sales tax on the transaction. It is possible that purchasers of motor vehicles will be required to pay local taxes in certain cities such as Sun Valley, Ketchum, Stanley, Lava Hot Springs, and Driggs. These taxes are administered by the local governments that impose them and specific questions should be directed to them. NOTE: there are some exemptions to sales/use tax.
