After seeing how much it's costing to send CMRR on everything that goes out, I read about digital RR that costs only 85 cents instead of $2.15. On digital delivery the green card is scanned and you can print out a copy of it from USPS's website.

Also, I had mentioned on another board but didn't get much response.... why do we have to send EVERYTHING with RR? How often do we really need the signed green card? It's obviously not on every letter that goes out. So instead of paying $2.15 or even 85 cents on every letter, why not just pay $3.80 on the rare occasions that you need the RR for court or other proof?

You can order a copy of the RR for up to 2 years after mailing a CM letter:

Unless I'm reading wrong.

Any thoughts?

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with DRR. I have dealt with CAs via fax and even email.

However, if you really want an ironclad paper trail, CMRRR is the way to go, tried and true. An actual green card from USPS just seems a little more real than a DRR printout.

Now, could you prove that a DRR printout is legit? I am sure you can. But I would spend the money for the "actual" thing because you never know if you ever had to deal with a technophobe in legal proceedings. I know I may be reaching, but you have to try to cover all bases.

I am sympathetic though. If I calculate how much I spent via CMRRR, I'd probably have an extra house payment!

A physical CMRR green card doesn't age off in two years. It isn't ever going to be challenged by an opposing lawyer who claims that the date or the information on a printout could have been altered, photoshopped.

Will you end up needing it for a paper trail? Maybe not. Hey, you could even say probably not. But, if you end up facing a lawsuit in two and a half or three years, and some things may eventually drag out that long -- and that DRR doesn't cut the mustard with the presiding judge -- then remember to bite your tongue about wishing and grousing that you had had acceptable proof.

Price versus benefits. The same tradeoffs and decisions which one makes about many, many purchases.
