  1. I had a similar situation happen years ago. I kept getting charged and my account eventually went negative. I didn't ask my bank to close the account, but I did ask that they put a freeze on it until I can get myself out of the hole. They had no problem with that. I would get a second bank account somewhere else, freeze your existing account, and try to work with the company you owe money to. Also I think there's a law that you can't continue to submit the same check to the bank after a set number of times.
  2. Thanks for the info. However what the CS rep says and what the CRAs actually do might be two different things. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
  3. I am having the same problem. I just checked my report and it shows the last payment as of September. It also shows up as transferred/sold on my Equifax report.
  4. It probably doesn't really mean anything. Equifax's online dispute tracking has been worthless for me. First of all, I mail my disputes yet I get emails that I'm supposed to get the results online. More than 30 days go by and I see online that it is still in pending status. When it's in pending status you can't view the results. The kicker is when I called Equifax they told me that they already finished the review. Not only did the pending status not change, but they also didn't mail me the results. This has happened twice. I've had to call to have them mail me the results both times.
  5. Sorry, I don't have any real tips. I guess I just got lucky. I also just checked my Equifax report and it also says 'Pays as Agreed' with a $0 balance. I had some extra money and decided to settle for less than the balance owed. I paid $1000 to get the account settled. The cc company probably knew that they would lose in court if they tried to sue me since it was out of the SOL, so they took what they could get. Why they chose to report it this way is beyond me, but I'm not complaining. I think if you dispute it after you've paid the balance, then some creditors are less likely to verify, or at the least won't be as concerned with verifying.
  6. So I settled in full with a credit card company two months ago. This was a charged off account from 5 years ago. The balance had not changed on my Transunion report, so I disputed it. The results of the dispute were going from: Adverse Account Balance: $3,122 Pay Status: >Charged Off as Bad Debt< Date Updated: 07/2010 High Balance: $3,122 Credit Limit: $1,300 Past Due: >$3,122< to: Satisfactory Account Balance: $ 3,122 Pay Status: Paid or paying as agreed Date Verified: 11/2010 High Balance: $ 3,122 Credit Limit: $ 1,300 So what would be better in this case? Should I dispute it again and tell them this was a settled charge off and get the balance dropped to zero, or should I just leave it alone and let it report as a satisfactory account with an over the limit amount?
  7. Thanks for all the advice. They would accept to settle for $1200. I am not familiar with 623 investigations, but I'll do some research.
  8. I was only going to settle for less than what's owed, not pay the full amount. I live in NC. The OC is Discover Card, but they still have the account, no CA. It first went delinquent back in early 2005. I honestly would just let it fall off, but again having all your debts taken care of is important when trying to secure a security clearance. I might just have to bite the bullet. They are reporting everything correctly although a card with a $1000 limit is now over $3000 even though that's all late fees which is ridiculous.
  9. I have a charged off credit card that the original creditor reports every month without fail with the charge off notation. I was wondering what the pros and cons would be of settling this account. PFD did not work, and they told me that all they would do is update the account as settled in full. It will fall off at the end of 2012, but honestly I would like this to stop hanging over my head because it could hurt me from obtaining security clearances for employment I am seeking within the next year.
  10. Don't have an answer to your question, but just curious what you were doing in Japan for that long?
  11. Ugh, payday loans. When I was really hurting financially years ago I had several payday loans out. I'd take out one payday loan to take care of another. After awhile I gave up and just quit paying on them. I would have end up paying 5 times the original amount. Never again.
  12. I got the same thing yesterday. I honestly don't think it's a preapproval. It's just inviting you to apply. I got the same thing for a credit card from them, I applied, and was denied. Ended up losing 10 points off my score. I wouldn't bother with it unless you really need it.
  13. No offense, but anytime I hear someone majored in women's studies I get the impression that getting a good job wasn't a top priority.
  14. I looked all over for this, but couldn't find anything. Looks like NFCU branches only or bust.
  15. That's a good point about doing the math. I didn't consider that. Although I am also interested in federal government employment and I know they frown on unpaid debt. I owe about 7 grand, but I am confident I can get half that waived.
