  1. I would probably start with paying all your loans on time from here on out so that you don't get MORE lates on them. Then, try to resolve your other accounts that are in collections...see if they will do a PFD so that they get erased from your reports once you pay them off. Then, get a secured credit card so you can start building some positive credit. If you have a spouse or parent with good credit, they may be willing to add you as an AU to an credit card or 2 that has good history? That would also help. I really don't think you'll be able to erase the student loan lates in most cases, but if it makes you feel better, my H had 9 loans all in default and we have still managed to get his credit to rebound somewhat (low to mid 600's currently).
  2. I understand that a default will remain on your credit reports whether you've paid it off or not...but if you were to do rehab, shouldn't the default status be removed in NSLD? I'm confused about this b/c I have a similar issue...though I guess there are some differences with my situation... I rehabilitated 2 different loans and was so excited to see the little !default! icon gone from them on NSLD to show that they were no longer in default. Two months later, and one of them says it's back in default. When I click on it to get more info, it says '9 consecutive payments made, then missed payments'. I did NOT miss payments. So I call the guarantor, who says it's an error and says that the loan servicer would need to correct the error in their reporting to NSLD. I then contact the servicer, who says that they reported it correctly so it's not their problem and I have to do a dispute with NSLD. That is as far as I got so far b/c I logged on to NSLD and do not see any process for disputes. Any ideas or help with this? I' hate to have gone through the whole rehab process, just to have the loan show up as being back in default.
  3. The SAME thing happened to me...in October 2011. I'm STILL trying to get it fixed, and DOE does not even hold my loans anymore because they were transferred to PHEAA once I completed rehabilitation. Good luck getting your $100 back, but I'm starting to think I'll never see that $150 again. ETA: Mine was not an issue with 2 checks at once...just one check sent during the system changeover that got cashed, but never credited to my account.
  4. I don't know, but in my experience, DOE has just been a nightmare all around. Paperwork lost multiple times, payments missing from payment history, don't even get me started on the computer system change over. They all seem to be completely inept and incapable of resolving even the most straightforward of issues or answering the simplest of questions accurately.
  5. When the DOE had the system changeover last Oct, my Oct payment for loans in rehab (paper check sent by mail) was cashed but was never recorded in the payment history. Been trying to fix this for MONTHS. Sent DOE a letter and bank records showing that the check was cashed. They received these documents over 2 months ago and have been telling me it's 'being processed' and to call back in a week or so ever since then. I call again today and I'm told that they sent the documentation to the 'National Payment Center' so I 'should hear something soon.' I ask if I can contact the 'National Payment Center' to find out what the hold-up is. No. They don't have a phone number. Ummm...okay (BS!)... The guy tells me that my loans have (finally!) been approved for rehabilitation (for a while the missing payment was actually holding up my rehab as well) so he says that at this point the missing payment is 'moot.' Um, yeah, because I wanted to just 'donate' that $150 to the DOE out of the kindness of my heart! Any ideas on if there's anything else I can be doing about this? Anyone else I can contact? Would this be an issue for Ombudsman? If / when my loans get transferred to a new servicer (as per the rehab), I assume I will be SOL. I mean, good luck trying to get the balance adjusted at that point right? (I asked the DOE guy about that last part and he claims that if that were to happen, I'd get a refund for the payment...I'll hold my breath for that!)
  6. I'm confused...you are making payments, how do you not know who they are going to?...or are you getting garnished or something? I am finding out the hard way right now that transfers of SL's can take forever. I have a loan that's apparently been 'in the process of being transferred' to a new servicer for about 2 months now. Servicer A tells us that it's now with Servicer B and Servicer B tells us it's still with Servicer A...and NSLD has loan servicer, lender, and guarantor info all left completely blank!
  7. That's awesome! I had always heard not to bother GWing for SL's. Nice to know it's not necessarily a lost cause.
  8. UPDATE: So after speaking to them again a few days ago, they did initiate my rehab request. Of course, they also told me they are backed up and have no estimate for how long it will take for my loans to actually get rehabbed, and I should 'just keep making payments and keep checking back.' Ugh. My Oct payment is still not showing up...they have repeatedly confirmed that they received my documentation regarding this payment, but they are apparently still 'processing' it, which they have been for nearly 2 months now! So that is annoying, but I'm mostly just glad the rehab has been initiated. I'm feeling for everyone who fulfilled their payments in Oct (!) and are still waiting?!? I'm outraged on your behalf! Things are such a mess over there, it's absolutely ridiculous.
  9. That is awesome! I am still stuck in the black hole of the system changeover for the last 3 months now...my 9th payment should have been March. But if I recall, I think yours was even longer? I'm glad to know that at least some are going through...let's see how much longer I'll be waiting. I call them to bug them all the time and of course they never have any clue when my loan will be rehabbed.
  10. Thanks for the reply! The woman I spoke to did tell me that there was no rehab request initiated...but that was because I will have to get that Oct payment straightened out in order to have 9 consecutive. Now I know to just keep relentlessly following up with them, lol. I did not think to ask about the CRA reporting or anything, but I definitely will in the future if the rehab ends up taking a while to go through. Thanks!
  11. I'm on 10 payments and counting for rehabilitation...but Direct Loans *thinks* I have 8 payments because there is one check that was cashed in Oct (during the hot mess of a system changeover) that was never recorded in my payment history. I have been trying to get it straightened out since January, so that is pretty frustrating, but is mostly a side vent, lol! BUT, I'm mostly wondering if anyone has had rehab with them go through recently. I have heard the horror stories of the backlog and people being told that their rehab "should go through in a month or two"...repeatedly for months and months on end. I asked the woman that I spoke to today about this and she said that 'a small number of accounts' are starting to get rehabbed, but admitted that there was still a huge backlog and that she basically had no clue when I might be able to expect the rehab to go through. Just seeing if anyone has some experience to report...it is just really aggravating to be told to just keep paying indefinitely until we don't know when, and we'll give you an update on we don't know when!
  12. Yeah, there is a direct phone number on the docs, but no one has answered in the last week. There is an email that never seems to get a response either. The loan is relatively recent...3ish years ago. So I guess we keep trying to get ahold of someone and best case scenario is that the rehab is complete & the loan is returned to the University. Worst case scenario is we've been paying a BS CA our money for the last 9 months! Ugh...
  13. We are on payment #9 for my H's defaulted Perkins loan. The loan was transferred from the OC (the University) to a CA (General Revenue Corp) when it defaulted and we set up the rehab with the CA. Now, the University is contacting us after months of not hearing from them (which we didn't expect to b/c we were dealing with the CA) and saying that the loan is in default 16 months, must remit payment immediately, etc. My H thinks that the rehab is done and the loan got transferred back to the University...and that that is the reason we are now being contacted by the University. But I had thought that: a) Perkins loans require 12 payments for rehab, not 9?, and that we would have received notification of some sort from the CA if that were the case?, and/or that c) the info would not still say that the loan was in default if that were the case? It's impossible to get anyone from the University on the phone for the last week, and my H works such long hours that he has not had time during hours of operation to sit on hold with the CA for 30 minutes or more (I tried, but they wouldn't give me info regarding his loan). I'm just wondering if anyone has ever experienced something like this or can give me some insight. Does it ever happen where two agencies will mistakenly try to collect on the same loan at the same time? I feel like that is what's happening! I can't think of another explanation...this is the ONLY Perkins loan that he has, so unlike all his others, it's hard to confuse this one. I can't figure out what the deal is with this and can't get anyone on the phone...it's driving me nuts!
  14. Ok, thank you...I'm going to look into that!
  15. My H and I disputed some items on his credit report. We received notification from Equifax that they deleted one of the TL's. THEN...we get notification from TransUnion for the same TL..."verified: no change".... Is this normal?!? The CA must have verified with TU, but didn't bother to verify with Equifax? Why? If it matters, this TL is for a collection for an old utility bill. My H does not recall having this debt...and has also not lived in that state for several years when it popped up...so we were thinking it was actually in error, but I suppose it is legitimate if TU verified it? WTH??
