  1. I just got denied for a Grad PLUS loan that I need for this semester. I received this same loan last year without a problem. The reasoning was because I had a charge off account that has been there since 2006 and reported as charged off on 07/2011 (before I applied for the loan last year). Apparently they changed the regulations according to the lady I spoke to. My question is if I pay off this amount (I already contacted the company directly and was able to reduce it to $600 from $920), how likely is it that I'll be approved? The original creditor said that the charge off will still be on my credit report but the balance will be $0. I also spoke with someone representing the GRAD Plus loan and all the information she could give me was that it was a charge off account (couldn't even tell me which one?) that prevented me from getting approved. I don't want to get into a situation where I pay off this amount only to be denied the loan again, since I don't have any money to spare and desperately need this to pay off tuition. Anyone have any experience with this?
  2. Someone else besides whychat may be able to answer these quick (possibly stupid) questions regarding the pre-hipaa dispute letters: "I am sending this dispute certified mail # xxxx to make sure you receive it. " -How do I know the number prior to sending? "Make sure you HAND ADDRESS the envelope, use personalized stationery and purple or teal font, ( preferably italic)." -Purple or teal font (italic) on letter?, hand written or printed? What do you mean by personalized stationary, as in something with my name already printed on it?
  3. Bumping this because still unable to delete old addresses from Experian. Anyone have a correct address to send a dispute letter to (to Experian)? Or one that worked for them? What letter do I send? Thanks. And from above: "As the TU and EQ addresses have all been delete, am I free to send the pre HIPAA dispute letter to them now?" Or do I wait for the Experian to be deleted?
  4. Equifax addresses got deleted, all that are left are the Experian. Do I make attempt to call back everyday and hope to get lucky? Or do I send a dispute letter? Anyone have a link to a copy of a dispute letter? This is the address I got from their website after filing a dispute: Experian P.O. Box 9701 Allen, TX 75013 I read on other threads that they tend to either change, or attempt to block people from sending letters. Is this the correct address? Anyone had success with it? Or any others? As the TU and EQ addresses have all been delete, am I free to send the pre HIPAA dispute letter to them now? Thanks. Maybe whychat you can chime in when you get a chance?
  5. I have researched a bunch, but am looking for an answer for my situation. Some background: I have 5 total negative accounts. Two are for credit card/bank accounts from about 3-4 years ago, reported in 08 and 09. One of those status' is "closed" and the other is "Account charged off. $922 written off. $250 past due as of Jul 2009." Not exactly sure what that means? The next is for a student loan, that was being sent to the wrong address, but now is being paid on time. And the last 2 are medical, and I am attempting to delete those first. One is an unpaid bill from the hospital that got sent to the wrong address for $563, but I have known that it's been in collections for the past 6 months or so, it was opened and reported in August of 2009. The other is a paid bill of $75 that was close on July of 2009. -I opted out. -I managed to delete old addresses on TU easily, filed an online dispute with Equifax, but my problem came with Experian. The person I spoke with would only delete addresses that didn't have any accounts connected to them (which was most of them). The last 3 she wouldn't delete because it shows my "credit history" and I still have accounts tied to those addresses (I'm assuming the 2 credit card/bank accounts and medical accounts). My question comes with how I proceed from here. Do I keep trying and hope to get lucky with someone that will delete my addresses? Do I have to word my phrasing differently? Do I go ahead and send a letter? Do I get in touch with the CAs that have my debts, if they are even in collections anymore?(one says closed) If I get my addresses deleted on Equifax, do I go ahead and send the pre HIPAA Medical Dispute Letter to both TU and Equifax before addresses get deleted from Experian? Thanks, and I will continue looking over the forum to try and find answers.
  6. Rather than make a separate topic, thought I would respond with a similar scenario. I paid a $75 collections in September of 2009 with the first delinquency being June of 2008, after they had had the wrong address. So I instantly paid not thinking twice, but now this little $75 medical charge is showing up on my credit report. I'm guessing first I would want to opt out and then delete all my old addresses first? And then go about with sending the same letter to the CA? Just wanted to double check. Also, different account. It was never paid as they've been sending it to an old address (actually never mine, but a gf's I lived with for a month). It's still in collections, but I never receive anything regarding it (no phone or mail). It was placed in collection in 08/2009. How would I proceed with this one, assuming I opt out and delete my old addresses? Thanks!
  7. For the past 2 years or so, I have been paying off student loans without one late payment, about 15 accounts in total. However, in May I get a call that a student loan I wasn't even aware of was 120 days late. So I immediately put it into deferment cause I was slightly short of cash at that point (cause it was 4 months of built up payments). But, I had never received one notice in the mail prior. I believe they had been sending them to my mom's old address, where I haven't even lived at home for the past 3 years. Looking at my credit report now, it shows up as OK in Feb and March, and then all of sudden 90 and 120 days late in April and May. Would the fact that I had never received a paper notice be reasonable grounds to dispute this? Should I stop deferment and just start paying it, cause I can afford to now? It's serviced by the Dept of Education and I think it mentioned that they pay for some part of the interest, so would it be in my best interest to just continue deferment? Do I delete all addresses on my credit reports except the one I live in now, as I think the old address that the notices were being sent to is on mine as of now? Thanks!
  8. Hi, I'm new here, just wanted to see your thoughts on some issues. I've been reading new members info and trying to keep up for the past couple hours, and planning on doing this every night for as long as it takes. Quick Summary of my past: I am a recently graduated student, who finally has the ability pay back some debts. I stupidly took out 2 or so credit cards during my college years along with a bad bank account, and naturally never paid anything-partly the fact that sometimes I didn't care and mostly that I never got sent mail from my home address. I've solved a couple of past accounts and are not showing up on my credit report which I guess is a plus. I've been paying my student loans steadily for the past 6 months are so, 15 accounts in total, and they all show 100% positive payments. So, my question is what I'm going to do about my remaining 5 accounts that are lingering on my credit report. 1. Bank Credit Card, Balance was about $1700 but was closed in 04/2008. It was opened in February of 2006. It now shows balance of $0 as of 04/2008 (this might actually be the one my mom took out in my name, long story, but now I'm held with the responsibility). So, does this mean that the balance was paid, or that it was written off? If it was written off is there anything to do about this debt, or do I just wait? If it was paid and then the account was closed, can I do anything? 2. Bank Account Overdrawn, Balance $900 last reported 07/2009, 180 past due as of 11/2007. According to the notes "account charged off, $900 written off. $250 past due as of Jul 2009." I think I may have (stupidly) agreed to pay monthly payments of $250 and for some reason stopped receiving notices as of July 2009, as I keep all my paper docs. Now that it's been "charged off" does that mean it's being sent to another CA, or that it's written off as bad debt? Would paying it do anything? 3. Medical bill, $500 past due as of 11/2009. After browsing the medical forum I realized that there is some sort of special treatment for these in paying directly to the health provider. Anyone mind summarizing or linking to a summary? 4. Medical Bill $75, paid to a credit agency and closed on 07/2009. Yet it's still lingering. I'm sure this may be the same info as the above referenced account except that it's still open. 5. Student Loan which was being sent to my parent's house, so had no idea until a couple months ago but by that time it had already 120 days late. But am now paying off now, but it is still showing up on my credit report. Is there any way to get this off of it? I am looking to get a credit card to start building credit again. I read about secured credit cards, what do you recommend. If I'm now getting preapproval ads in the mail, does that mean I'd qualify. Or is there a target or minimum score I should use before applying anywhere-as applying and getting rejected is obv not what I want. I'm sorry ahead of time if some of this information is already supplied elsewhere on the forum. I'm slowly making my way through everything and reading everything possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
