Along with working on my CRs I'm working on my SO's. Luckily (or unluckily) the only things on his CRs are defaulted student loans. I'm finally learning my way around regular credit things but I know nothing of the student loan side.

-He has 7 accts ($2000-$4000) with CitiBank that say Paid Collection with DOLA of 3/03 (TU and EQ). But in addition TU is showing these accounts as having gone to SM Servicing with almost the same acct numbers. And then having them listed as United Student Aid Funds. (TU is a mess) Now noticing that the original CB loans are under the DOE name as one lump sum (on EQ)

-2 Sallie Mae accts ($3500 and $5000) with DOLAs of 7/2000 but last reporting of 4/2003 has them deferred.

-2 DOE accts ($5000 and $5500) with DOLAs of 9/2002 and collection account status.

I have no idea what to tell him but did notice the mention of "rehab" while I was going through the forum. And help would be greatly appreciated.

(Off to read through the forum :) )

You can't rehab private student loans but you can others. 12 months of payments and it should rehab if it isn't a private loan.

As for the ones that are marked as paid collections a simple rehab dispute may fix it.

More questions. All of his loans are defaulted but on his reports some say that there is a claim filed with the government. Do we DV those like a CA or start off with "not mine" letters to the CRAs. This whole thing is confusing.

It is almost impossible to get anywhere with the "not mine" approach with the CRA's. The defaulted lenders/services are on your report legally and can be verified fairly easily.

The best thing is to have him call 1-800-4FEDAID and find out where all his loans are and start dealing with them. Rehabbing will remove the negative DOE info. Remind him these loans are accruing interest daily, not to mention the fact the longer he goes, the closer he comes to be garnished or being sued if he has private loans.
