Just wondering if anyone knows how often nslds.ed.gov updates or when?

I just had about $37,000 in student loans disappear from my loan servicer, called and they said they where transferred to SallieMae but SallieMae says they where not and according to nslds.ed.gov they are paid off.

My normal payment date is next week and I'm not sure where the heck to send the payment to even, I am one trade line away from perfect credit right now and the last thing I want is a late when its not even my fault...

This all started a few weeks ago and I sent letters on Monday, to SallieMae, DirectLoan Servicing, and Department of Ed Ombudsman office. I have also called all 3, everyone says don't worry you will get a letter and just make payment then if they have been transfered but the weird part is most people are saying they show as paid off in the system. I'm pretty sure if I accidentally paid of $37,000 in student loans I'd know...

Just wondering if its common when they transfer the loans that they completely drop off the map for several weeks???

If I don't hear anything by end of day Tuesday, I'm going to fedex my payment to SallieMae because Direct Loan Servicing gave me their address to send future payments too. Atleast this way I have proof I TRIED to make the payment and hopefully I don't end up loosing the payment in this method.... but I'm not sure what else to do?

Congratulations. You have discovered that Federally backed student loans are one hot mess right now.

Because the feds got rid of Stafford loans, they have decided to hire these lenders back as contractors who know Jack Schitt. Don't rely on NSLDS. They update about every 30 days. Make sure you have a screen cap of your loan payment history with your current servicer. I wouldn't send a payment to SM until you see their loans showing on their site. You will probably get a new TL reporting from SM. DL will be zero and then SM will begin reporting.

You have 15 days past your payment due date as grace to make your payment without a late fee penalty and still have it be considered 'on time'.

I'm waiting for my loans to be transferred to SM as well. Nothing yet and it's been 30 days. Mine are still showing on Direct Lending, currently.

Wow, this is amazingly awesome. I Know I'm probably being crazy over proactive but I've worked so hard the last 5 months to get my credit up and I've made some amazing progress.... I'm just super freaked out by this whole thing especially considering how far I've come both with my credit in generally and my financial responsibility. Even my friends and family have noticed the change, I just don't want anything raining on my parade.

Good to know about NSLDS, I was hopping that might be the best place to see where they are going to pop up but it sounds like its not going to be very reliable.

Well I just looked at my credit report pulled yesterday (I normally don't look at the salliemae/department of ed lines cuss I know they are all good.) and sure enough, all the loans are reporting $0 balance on EQ and TU, and no new trade lines yet. Hmm Okay...

I'll sit tight for a few more days, my bigger concern is I am going to be out traveling for work late this next week and just was informed there is possibility I wont be home until July. I'd like to have this resolved before I leave so I don't have to harass my sister to check my mail and such... but if need be I guess that is really my only option.

Dept of Ed typically only reports to one or two of the CRA's. The others just pick it up thru data sharing.

I discovered this one when I consolidated and TU was still reporting a balance months after the consolidation went thru. Took 2 disputes to get them to zero the balance reporting.

Yea I've noticed that... my EX still reports all 8+ loans from prior to my consolidation and the new consolidated loan which showed up like instantly..... it makes me look like I owe 2x the student loan debt I do... but I'm not applying for credit soo I'm going to give it some more time, that combined with TU and EQ now showing $0 for the original loans and the newer consolidated loan I'd like to this to settle out first...

On a side note: the fact that the CRA's go out looking for data to paste on our reports without any level of checking to make sure its correct is ridiculous..... but that is an issue for another day.

What if you consolidate while in deferment? Does this offset the dilemma of not knowing where to send payments?

If you're in deferment, you're not in repayment.

Caution on deferment vs forbearance: You are limited in the number of months of any type of deferment so use them wisely. Once you consolidate, you have a new loan and your deferment clock resets to 0 and you have all your deferments months available to you.

Know how to use them. They are valuable in hard times.
