Years ago individuals argued some extremely convoluted things to try to avoid paying federal income tax. All of them lost, many wound up in prison.

Today that bit of history is repeating in a handful of cockeyed theories that try to avoid repayment of debt with arguments that would seem more appropriate in Lewis Carroll than in a courtroom. They go by names such as "creditors in commerce" and "no money lent" (the latter basically arguing the unreality of our monetary system, which for courts is pretty much beside the point). The argument even popped up on Canadian freethinker Henry Makow's popular blog:

Fortunately he allowed me to post a comment that essentially blew it out of the water (and gave me 600+ hits yesterday on my debt book on scribd.com  ).

I imagine many of these arguments will be making their appearance here, where they will serve only to confuse people and obscure real help and sound advice that can be given.

Fasten your seatbelts folks!

I'd read some kooks on craigslist forums with the same argument - had to do with the ALL CAPS NAME and other odd technicality stuff.

It's amazing that this sort of thought can be believed by rational people. I understand the desperation, but for the love of god - shouldn't something have to seem based in reality in order to hook you?

"If you can't bedazzle them with brilliance, befuddle them with B.S." seems to be what these folks are driving at ... their patron saint must be Professor Irwin Corey.
