Hi.

Here's the story. I was transported to hospital in April 2000. I received the ambulance bill, submitted it to my insurance company and that was the last I heard about it. Fast forward to July 26th 2006...over 6 years later and I receive a call from a collection agency stating I owed on this $500 ambulance bill!

I sent the agency a verification letter on July 27th, and it's been over a month with no response. What is my next step? I faxed it from Staples so I have a receipt showing that I did indeed fax it to them. Should I try to find their mailing address and mail it registered mail with return receipt? Should I contact the ambulance service? The agency said that the bill was sent to collections by the fire department last year. Why would a company wait 5 years and then send it to collections? The collections lady said they can send a bill to collections any time they want. Is this true?

Please help me figure out my next move! Thank you! :P

Yup, it's on my report. I sent the letter over a month ago...the end of July. It was faxed the day after the collection agency called me.

Have you had any contact with the OC(ambulance place)and what about your insurance, what did they have to say about this. You may need to contact them to see what is going on.

Also two things can happen here, since you already DV them, you may need to send a DV2. OR You can go through the HIPAA process with the medical dispute letter FIRST from Whychat's site, but if you go this route then you cannot have any contact with the CA(that including not dving them as that will negate the HIPAA process). Remember before you start any credit repair to opt out and delete old addresses if possible.

I don't even remember what insurance I had 6 years ago...it's changed a few times. I haven't had any contact with the fire department, so I'm wondering if I should call them and find out why they held onto the bill for so long. And also to find out why they never sent me another bill or notification that my insurance denied it. Is is true that a company report something to a credit bureau anytime they want? Are there no time limitations? Five years seems a bit excessive.

What is opt out? Also, why should I delete old address from my credit reports? How do I go about opting out and deleting addresses?

Thank you!

I would definitely call OC since this so old and see what is going on.

By getting rid of the addresses, you're giving the CRAs one less piece of information about you with which to verify the TLs.
