My nephew has traveled from IN to TN, he's settled in the dorm and is now being told that he can't attend classes until he pay's $5k. We're in desperate need of information. He currently has a Pell grant 3K, subsidized & unsubsidized loan(s). He doesn't qualify for sallie mae w/out co-signer.

What are we to do (no extra money)? Please someone help. Our credit cards are maxed....

Do you know if he's a traditional dependent student? Independent?

If he is dependent and was offered a Parent PLUS loan, one of the parents listed on his FAFSA can fill out a PLUS application. Parents have to be credit worthy, students do not. If the parent is denied for the PLUS loan, the student can receive up to an additional $4000 for the year on his own.

The parent must take this extra step in order to be considered.

If he is Independent, ask the college financial aid office if they have any Perkins money. Perkins is a loan he can get on his own.....IF the school has $.

Did he not know what his expenses were before he left home?
