Thought loans were paid

I have rehabed several PNC student loans and my CR is now reflecting positively; however, I also have Federal SL's (which I thought were taken care of) but it still shows a $6000 balance. I was surprised because my returns were garnished for like 2 or 3 years. I assumed the balance was paid off, but there is that $6,000 showing. I don't even know the amount they took from my taxes, so I feel like they can tell me anything. Any suggestions?
