More later, as I am on my way out the door...

Background: http://torreylisa.blogspot.com/2009/04/tha...d-it-again.html (you have to click the back story links from that last entry for the full saga)

I discovered at least 5 arms of the Department of Education that are not disclosing a program that is meant for fully disabled citizens. The transparency of the program is weak, and I have a slew of service members and civilians lined up ready and willing to share their story to the GAO office of how they were misdirected, lied to or mislead.

I had my conference with them today after providing evidence all week so they can start the investigation.

They are very, very interested in Arrow's part in this whole saga. For the record, Arrow is fully owned by Sallie Mae. It makes you wonder...

They are also looking at the credit industry in conjunction with this issue, how the CRA's refuse to fix the errors in reporting SL's (and other federal debts). I am SO happy I got their attention!

Anyway, it's not every day a gal can conduct serious business in her Happy Bunny pajamas. Today was that day.

OMG.. I just read your story.. if I didn't just deal with "government" worker myself earlier.. I wouldn't believe it.

But to be honest I did know about the perminate disability program.... possibly because I filed for forbearance several times now, and it was always listed on my forbearance paperwork. But, then again, my loans got sold out of Salle Mae WAY early in my educational loans (thankfully). They kept screwing up month after month one of my friends loans.

But, I can honestly see, where if someone that's never filed for forbearance knows about all their programs and relies on a "rep" to tell them what programs they qualify for given their situation.

And for them to still be reporting default? That's just plain utter stupidity on their part.

For those not familiar with GAO:

The Government Accountability Office, the audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of Congress, exists to support Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and accountability of the federal government for the American people. GAO examines the use of public funds; evaluates federal programs and policies; and provides analyses, recommendations, and other assistance to help Congress make informed oversight, policy, and funding decisions. GAO’s commitment to good government is reflected in its core values of accountability, integrity, and reliability.

DH and I have worked with the GAO in the past so we had already established a relationship with their offices and staff. I haven't had to contact them for quite some time so I was surprised when I emailed my contact and got a call within 30 minutes asking how they can help. :P It went on from there to submitting evidence all week and then having the conference with their analysts and investigators. I think this will be ongoing for awhile and not something that gets fixed over night, but I am just relieved to see them on the subject and taking it seriously. I am thinking the DOE/Sallie Mae/Arrow/DLS/etc. will be sorry I kept such great notes and did as much research as I did.

Our situation was resolved before going to the GAO, so I didn't go to them to "fix" something on our behalf or for personal gain. I just asked them to fix the problem on behalf of those who could use the help.

DragonFlyer- excellent work, a big thanks, from me personally on this!

You betcha! You are the reason/inspiration I get so heated on subjects like this. You deserved more than what you received and have paid a high price for their attitude of indifference.
