If you have been actively engaged in your own credit repair for at least two months, please answer the following poll question and then attach any testimonials you are willing to release into the public domain regarding this tactic.

Thanks!

I successfully use goodwill tactics over the phone will BB&T (regional bank in the southeast) to remove a 30-day late (on my mother's acount-mistakenly paid late).

I used the angle that she has been a very long time BB&T customer with several deposit, personal credit, business credit, and mortgage accounts and that this is her only late on her entire report and "we know we messed up but all we can ask for is mercy."

It worked. I am nor in the process of getting the lates removed from the CRAs.

Tried verbal goodwill with Sallie Mae, got shot down flat. Tradelines later deleted as a result of a dispute.

Sent goodwill to Providian re: lates via PFB and was also shot down. Lady did tell me that if I needed a letter from them outlining what a great customer I had been in the 2 years since the last late payment that she would be more than happy to give me one to assist in my .... uhh, quest for a mortgage (:)). But no dice on deleting the late payments.

I'm a HUUUUGE FAN of the goodwill letter! I'd say it has worked for me about 80% to 90% of the time. I've even followed a goodwill denial with another *version* of the goodwill and gotten what I've asked for!

Simply put...if you haven't tried this method, shame on you

Goodwill letter worked for with a local hospital. They cropped up as collection when I was closing on my mortgage. I paid them, then wrote a goodwill letter. The collection was deleted within days.

Haven't gotten to the point yet where I am ready for a goodwill letter yet. If all else fails, then I will try - probably should send one to Fleet since they insist on leaving it on my report even though I paid. (Did I mention it was removed from all 3 of my DHs reports?  )

I will add my testimonial.

I L-O-V-E Goodwill letters. It worked for AT&T Wireless, BofA, The Limited, Cap 1, Target, Service Merchandise. The only one it did not work on is Express.

The only bad thing, is that some CRAs still have the lates listed while others do not. Equifax is the best and Experian is the worst. Out all of the companies I listed - Limited and Target are the only companies where the lates do not show on any CRA. The others at least have 1 late and any of the 3 CRAs but do not show on all 3.

I tried disputing and other methods but they are all old, over 2 years and I am happy with the results. It has not stopped me from getting new CC or a mtg.

I have had success with Discover and Household/Best Buy. I don't believe the Goodwill actually did the trick, I think that since my lates were at the 6 year mark, they could not verify the accounts because of their system storage limitations - so they deleted the accounts.

I have had goodwill results with:

Sears

FNBO

Conns Appliance

All were lates 2+ years old, 0 balance open accounts. I used my own goodwill format because the templates I had seen were a little long winded. I have had no luck with PFB.

This was long before I found CB. I had a late to Discover. I called them up and asked them if they could wave the late fee. Not only did they, but it isn't on any of my credit reports.

I did that on one other occaision less successfuly. I asked if they could not report it since I was only 1 day late. The lady got really nasty with me and said something like, "I can't alter your credit history, that's illegal!" She was very hostile to me for the rest of that call. She was the only bad service I've had with Discover.

I've had goodwill success with GEMB - JCPenny & Citi.

Turned down by Dillards, BofA & WFNNB.

Running at 50%, but their replies opened the door for deletion due to incorrect reporting and their response quoting the FCRA accuracy portion. :yu:

yaaayyyy, just got my first goodwill correction!

It was to Express for one 30-day late in 2001. The account has been closed for a couple years now, but I only have one positive TL on my reports, and 6 derogs, so i need every positive i could get.

I sent them a letter requesting one, explained what happened to incur the late and stressed the fact that I never was late again until I closed the card.

Just got a letter in the mail saying they would change the status for that month to paid as agreed...i'm elated beyond words....goodwills really DO work! :)

I wrote a real butt smooching Goodwill letter to my Credit Union and they totally removed all BK notations from my Reaffirmed debt...and left it as a pristine PERFECT tradeline on my credit. They told me to call back when I pay off my second Reaffirmed debt with them and they will do the same. =)

HSBC/SAKS 30 day late 8/03

I called their customer service (7/05). Explained I was not late. I told him that I hardly use this card. The last time I used it my payment was not recorded properly by the billing department and it is hurting my credit score. Can you please adjust your records so that it is reported correctly. He said not a problem. I will update your payment history and it will not show any lates. A goodwill call worked for me.

MBNA 30 day late 11/02

Called them in 1/03. They basically told me no way, are you kidding, wake up this is MBNA. I was at my best behavior and told her that it was hurting my score and I was late but not 30 days late and the information that they are reporting is incorrect. The CSR finally told me that they dont have the data handy after 24 months. If I were to request or dispute with them after 24 months ( given of course if all my future payments are made on time ) they then may consider removing it. They dont like to go through the effort of digging deep into their data base and retrieving old infomation especially if the customer has been making payments on time lately. Now I think I will just wait for BOA to complete their aquisition before I take any further action. I believe I have a better chance with BOA then MBNA.

I sent a letter into PFB as well as a letter addressed to the office of Ken Stork.

Letter to Ken Stork was sent 1/9, PFB was sent 1/16.

Today, I received a CB from the executive offices, who politely turned me down for removal of a 60 day late from Fall 2006.
