If in the end no car was sold, how is a sales tax due?


Big sign or not, the dealer has no right to keep the down payment when there is no deal.  Suggest you go there with a friend when returning the car.  Your friend's instructions are to sit in the car and stay there so that they can't touch it, until you come out with the down payment in your hand.
