I find myself in need (okay, want) of a credit card from BOA.
Unfortunately, BOA happened to be one of the cards I was holding when my divorce, and subsequent financial meltdown, occurred. It was never charged off. They got paid in full eventually, though there was at least 1 30-day late in November of 2010 (which has or should fall off any day now). I thought that there was also a 60 and 90 day-late in spring of 2008, but looking back on some older reports I have, it looks like that might have been the other card and I was able to keep the BOA card mostly current. A couple of my reports show that the card was cancelled at BOA's request in May of 2011. I don't really remember the details of why it was closed. I was paying it, but not using it, so it's possible that it was closed for non-use, but I was still pulling myself out of the trainwreck that had been my former life and it's possible that they got nervous. There was also a kerfluffle at the end when I tried to pay it off. The February auto-pay went through fine, but 10 days later I attempted to pay the balance with my tax refund using the same payment account online. It got kicked back and I got hit with a $25 returned payment fee. I double checked the routing/account number with BOA and it was the same as the auto-pay that had been successful a few days before. I talked to my credit union, who said that they never received the request for payment from BOA. I paid the balance, along with the fee, with a phone rep and it successfully went through. A few days later I called a second phone rep who agreed with me that the screw up was somewhere on their end and she ended up being able to get BOA to cut me a check for the $25. For the record, I swore I'd never use BOA again, but I guess you never can tell.
If it makes any difference, in my former life, I also had two BOA cards that were closed for non-use (like I don't think they ever had a balance), and a car loan that was paid off.
Today, I find myself with much, much better credit (815 EQ, 783 TU) and a good job. I have 6 open cards, none that carry a balance month-to-month, and none from BOA. Though one or two may show a small balance based on when the payment went through vs. when it was reported to the CRAs. I'm 5/24 until January with the newest one being opened in April of this year. AAOA is just 18 months with the oldest open account being 2 years, 7 months, so I'm kind of concerned about that. I know opening a new account won't help that, but it is what it is.
So, what are my chances with BOA? The creditpulls dB doesn't have much in the way of information about the exact card I'm looking at (Amtrak), but some of the similar cards seem to have mixed results regarding approvals. I don't want to take a HP just to end up with a secured card. Should I wait until the 30 day late falls off of all my reports? Or until January when I'm under 5/24? I kind of need to either have the card or know that I'm being denied by February so I can start working on another gameplan for the trip I want to take.
