Can I henna that? :) I haven't colored in probably 6 months. I've got, like, 4 inches of root hanging out on my head. :(

You could check hennaforhair dot com. I think she makes mixes with henna and indigo that can result in different shades of red.

Indigo?! The eff?!

Sigh. I suppose I'll read.

That website has everything you need to know and more re: henna. I am debating on going to black by doing henna and then indigo on top of it. Haven't totally decided. I think it would blend my grays better. Right now the rest of my hair is a dark red/brown but the grays aer bright red.

I need to figure this out as well, since I noticed I have a few more grays...

I just threw some L'oreal or whatever random box of straight up ammonia I found in Grandma's house on my head last night. I just don't have the patience for all of this for some color.

I figure, I go through so much trouble on the other end of stuff, the ammonia isn't gonna kill anything. I just can't with all that for some color...of course, I'm also that chcik that just isn't all that picky about my hair. I mean I don't dump everything in it, but when its time to get rid of the dusty brown, I'm just not spending more that a few seconds to be holding a box with gloved hands...

Well, I was interested until this.

My hair's been color treated since 7th grade.

Apparently, from what I've been reading, you can do art-grade henna on color treated hair. Compound henna is some type of pre-mixed situation, that doesn't react well to color treatedhair.

Yep - body art quality henna is the way to go if you've had prior hair color treatments. Sometimes you will see it abbreviated as BAQ henna.

From Henna for hair:

"Compound Henna Dye

This is a term that refers to hair dye marketed as henna, and is formulated in different colors.

These mixtures may contain additional plant dyes, may contain metallic salts, and may contain para-phenylenedmine. "

There is no such plant as "blonde henna", "brown henna" or "black henna". The plant, henna, lawsonia inermis, has only one dye molecule, and that molecule is red-orange.

Chemicals, metallic salts or other dye plants must be added to henna to make any color other than red. These mixes are termed compound hennas.

Some dye plants can be added to alter the color of henna. Some chemicals can be added to alter the color of henna.

Metallic salts alter and fix a dye stain. Many “henna colors†are created with metallic salts. The most frequently used material is lead acetate, though silver nitrate, copper, nickel, cobalt, bismuth and iron salts have also been used.

Dyes with lead acetate gradually deposit a mixture of lead sulfide and lead oxide on the hair shaft.

When you hear that henna has “metalâ€, “leadâ€, or “coats the hair†and “leaves it brittleâ€, that refers to a compound henna dye, full of these metallic salts.

Hair bleach, permanent hair color, and permanent wave solution are a disastrous combination with compound (metallic salt) henna dyes. These can result in green, purple, or totally fried hair.

Body art quality henna does NOT have metals, lead, nor does it “coat the hairâ€. This website is dedicated to providing you with the information to learn to dye your hair with 100% pure henna, indigo, cassia and amla without using pre-mixed "compound henna". "

:)

So basically, you don't want one that has metallic salts in it. But you're fine if other plant dyes have been added, like indigo, woad, walnut, cassia obovata, saffron, chamomile, etc.

To make sure you aren't into compound henna, it's best to just purchase the plant dyes listed above and mix them yourselves (of course, purchase from a reputable resource). Then you know you're not dealing with metallic salts.

the hennas I use add plants and/or teas....

the box for each "color" tells you how it achieves that color...

100% Natural Plant Based Hair Dye : Colora henna hair dye is made from 100% pure organic plant based ingredients."

Ingriedients: henna

May also contain:

indigo, centaurea, rhubarb, lichen, litmus.

I do understand that the creme version uses alcohol and Propylene Glycol

I think giraffy should order BAQ & play with making colors... I gotta get ready to leave for work but I have a chart of what teas to add to get certain colors... will post it later/tomorrow
