Kat58 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I have total credit lines of $45.5k with Cap One with an annual income of $36k. When my Discover migrates to Cap One, my total credit lines will be $77k. I'm concerned that Cap One will close some of my cards (3 being my oldest) and wondering if I should be proactive and reduce some of my credit lines myself before that happens. Any input would be greatly appreciated. hegemony and MP80 2 Quote
MP80 Posted February 19 Posted February 19 (edited) Hello, Kat Yes, you'll face this predicament if your total credit limit with a single card issuer reaches or exceeds $30,000. Therefore, diversifying your investments across at least 5 to 6 card issuers, rather than putting all your eggs in one basket, can prevent your credit limit from being reduced or even your account from being closed. Lenders are generally cautious, relying heavily on artificial intelligence and algorithms; this is ubiquitous, and each lender has the right to determine which customers are considered high-risk to impose restrictions on their risk exposure or to cessation from lending. As for other institutions, I'm more concerned about Chase than Capital One, at least for now, because Capital One informs customers in advance, allowing them to adjust credit limits based on their spending patterns and opt out of credit account reviews. I currently have two credit cards (Venture and Discover It) with a total credit limit of $65,400. If you pay off all your balances in full, you don't need to worry. No, you don't need to ask them to lower your credit limit, even though an annual income of $35,000 is slightly lower than the $77,000 credit limit offered by Capital One. Remember, Capital One doesn't care about how much you make or your reported income; they only care if you make your payments on time, and they are more generous and forgiving than most banks. supern8ural Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Mine migrated in January but my Discover limit is only $10k (and has been stuck there for over a year) and my only Cap1 card is a Savor with a $24K CL. They haven't lowered either CL in fact I am hoping that I can get my Discover CL raised as Cap1 has been much more generous with me than Discover (both cards were opened around the same time, Cap1 with a $10k limit and Discover with $2k, I'm happy with Cap1 CL while Discover has been denying CLI requests for over a year) Quote
chicagorich Posted February 21 Posted February 21 How do you know if your Dicso card migrates to Cap1? Quote

PhoenixDown Posted March 14 Posted March 14 My card hasn't been migrated yet. I don't have any other Cap 1 cards so that may be why. I don't have the same hate for Discover that others do. They gave me a card that helped me rebuild and customer service, the few times I had to speak with them, were helpful (and US based although I'm sure that's not the case anymore). If anything I have issues with Cap 1 who would acquire banks and credit card companies and subsequently close out (my admittedly) sub-prime cards which were the only things I had way back when.
