Capital One Closed My Brand New Account

I am a convicted felon. I have a felony for obtaining property under false pretenses. Basically it was Medicaid fraud from 2018. I did 2 years in prison and got out October 2020.

I got approved for a Capital One and I’m assuming they did a background check and closed my account before I could activate it. How can I get this off my credit report as a closed account?

It will help your credit if it reports.  Your criminal record has no bearing on them closing your account.  Has to do with your credit record.

Not necessarily. They can and will do background checks and may close accounts for any reason.

THIS^^^^^.  CHASE is another creditor that has been known to suddenly close accounts for criminal issues decades before the account let alone current ones.  Many banks are now using criminal records in screening criteria.

Count your hidden blessings. The alternative action Crap1 could have taken would be to "bucket" you into a bottom tier credit bucket where you would stay - forever. Twenty years ago I had a Crap1 card with a magnanimous $500 line. My scores then were marginal (low 600's). As m,y credit score improved, Crap 1 refused to improve with me. When my scores finally hit 800 across all 3 bureaus, I once again asked for a CLI. I got one - from $500 to $524. Since Amex at that time had me at $30,000 and Chase at $10,000 and B of A at $36,000 I saw no need for a Crap 1 card. I closed the account.

Didn't keep it open to help AAoA? Or was there enough other cards to offset that?

Won't affect AAoA for 10 years so unless it's the oldest card or significantly older than most other cards AAoA is not a reason to keep a true dud open.

Definitely not a go-to card, but one of the few that avoids currency conversion fees for foreign transactions.

They also offer substantial bonuses to open a business card if you have the consumer flavor already.

Depending on what state you live in you can get your record expunged after 5-7 years.

I have been around the world on my Amex Delta Platinum and have never been charged a currency conversion fee. The conversion rates were comparable to going into a bank.

Every State has different rules for that on the State level; I would wonder if OP got State or Federal charges, as mentioned. The process is very different State vs Federal.

They must have been some kind of bad for Capital One to not only find them, but do that.. "Since when does Capital One do background checks?" I am not sure I've ever heard of that.. okay they check credit score but. 1. Since when do they get all in a twist about criminal? 2. "Objection, relevance?"

The links don't seem to be cooperating but I did a Google search for "federal expungement."

Nice, but I've never had an AMEX Platinum product for more than a year -- because of the fee that kicked in after the first year or was offset by a larger sign up bonus that first year. The Capital One cards are a good way to avoid the currency conversion fees on a budget with no card fees.

One of the benes of the card I have is a "Companion Fare" which is a once-a-year free accompanying ticket anyplace in the USA. I use it to pick up my grand-kids in Tucson and bring them back to Pittsburgh with me and return them home to Tucson (they are too young to fly alone). That bene alone is worth twice the AF I pay.
