Amazing.... card issue gave me a warning about impending account closure

I gotta give a tip of the hat to USAA Amex - I let their card slide for 3 years without using it. I get nothing for using it - no points, no atta-boys, no goodies, no benefits - but at least it helps bolster the bottom part of the fraction that goes into the UTIL part of credit scoring. Anyway, they sent me an email giving me 45 days to use the card just once or they will close it. I used it and I guess I am back in their good graces for another 3 years.

Not many issuers will do that, and I have to give USAA Amex a shout-out for it.

Chase did that for me a while back and I appreciate them for it as it's my oldest card.  Now I make sure I do use it every now and then, although they upgraded me to a CFU so it's not a real hardship.

I have calendar reminders to ping my sockdrawered accounts twice a year.

My favorite is the dorky Shell Drive for Five gas card.  I buy a $1 lottery ticket on it twice a year.  This is the sum total of my annual gambling.  One of those tickets matched 5 out of 6 numbers and netted us a cool $1,200 and change.

Thanks Shell Drive for Five/Citi retail! 😂

The warnings are nice, with the exception of the Target RedCard. I've had that card for 15 years and they seriously bug me if I don't use it for a few months. My current credit limit is $500 and they constantly send me mail cutting it to $100 until I use it and then back to $500 again. I think once years ago it was $1500.

I know this is a no-politics board so I won't go into why I don't shop Target anymore. But occasionally they have a good price on something like the water filters I like, and the RedCard is 5% off plus free shipping. The card also adds to my average age of open credit.

But again, they really harass me with the warning letters.

By they way, anyone know what this is about?

"Upcoming scheduled maintenance
Please complete all account activity before March 11 at 11:00pm CT.

The Target Circle™ Card account management system will be undergoing a scheduled maintenance period from March 11 at 11:00pm CT to March 18 at 12:00am CT."

They are seriously shutting down for a week? Who does that?

Weird, I've gone up to six months before without being nagged and keep getting small unsolicited CLIs.  Last one was $300 and took the card to $4,800.  I think the max I've ever charged in a statement cycle was $800 and change.  The max in the last two years is under $250.

Still use it but generally for less than $100/mo and frequently go two or three months without activity.

TD Bank is on my hate list for responding to a single bounced piece of mail by freezing the card, which we rudely discovered while in line with $400 worth of stuff to furnish a new apartment.  Funny thing is, they had a valid address and I got no idea why the mail bounced, regardless, am I wrong to think "Couldn't you have tried a phone call before shutting off the card?" 🤔😡

Interesting. Their algorithm might be looking at density of purchases outside of a dormant period to send the nags. (I know creditboards is a no politics zone -- so I won't go into why I use Target as little as possible these days.)

I remember back in the day when I had a $500 limit they cut to $100 and I realized that I'd probably have to split the purchase across another card or seriously keep track of my cart at the store. Makes me remember how embarrassing it was was when Citibank would shut off my card for fraud if I used it at Walmart.
