Afrosunshine
I disputed some errors in payment history on a charge off from 2018. TU updated my account by deleting payment data, and updating my status date from 6/2018 to 8/2023. Is this legal?
Admin MarvBear Posted September 14 Admin Share Posted September 14 Why would it not be legal? Would the status date now not be reflective of the result of your dispute?
hdporter
To be clear, don't confuse "status date" with "date of first delinquency (from which the account wasn't later brought current)". Only the latter of these (DOFD) determines when accounts closed with an adverse status (CO, etc.) are removed from your credit report. By contrast, status date notes the last time there was an update, of any kind, to the tradeline. MarvBear and CreditSucksNot

THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^. 57 minutes ago, Afrosunshine said: Is this legal? Of course it is legal. The requirement or ability to update a trade line with the most current information is why it is recommended to let sleeping dogs lie instead of stirring up trouble. Disputing accurate or even slightly inaccurate information with the hope that the trade line will be deleted often results in a negative impact when a formerly dormant TL gets infused with new information and updated. The secondary fallout is that the trade line is now cemented to the report and will remain for the entire 7 years 6 months. Consumers often fail to remember the bureaus are not required to automatically delete a trade line with inaccurate information only to correct the error. Yep. One of the classic unintended consequences of certain repair tactics that can cause a large score drop. Although a CO will ding your score for the full 7 years, it does diminish in impact over time and when it goes from 5 years to 0, it can drop you 100 points.
