You need to be a Canadian resident. I do have a Visa credit card from a Canadian bank, but I had to jump through hoops to get it, which included applying right at a branch in Vancouver, where I already had a bank account. As for Tim Hortons, I tried to sign-up for the card through the app, and it stopped me when entering my cellphone number. It wanted a Canadian area code, which it is not.  😕

I probably can. It's easy to get a VOIP number, but I think they want to text. That probably won't be a solution. I bet the next questions will be a need for a Canadian address, a Canadian social insurance number, and so on. I'm not going to bother.

Interestingly, it is not with a typical bank, although I am generally unaware of the Canadian market. I was guessing TD or BMO or Scotia or CIBC. But nope. According to the article linked by @hegemony

I suppose it's a positive that there is no annual fee? But given what @mrjuggalo9er said about the rewards, there's no FOMO here!
