Burgerwars
I wonder if Shell was able to bill the other oil companies for accepting their credit cards, or they just ate the loss in the process of obtaining a new accounts. MP80
I still have the exact Shell credit card and other fuel cards in my desk drawer, which is a bit later than when the video was advertised. I got it in 92. The Shell credit card featured in the ad video is actually issued by Shell in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Like Chevron and Unocal 76, they issue their own branded credit cards to customers. I think other fuel companies like Mobil, Exxon, and Texaco have issued their own credit cards in the beginning and then after a while sold the licensed product as an issuer to Monogram Bank in Georgia. I'm inclined to presume that a name and address were taken at the time of purchase and that this information was submitted to open an account, upon which the charge transaction was posted to the new account. I used to have a card like that. It was my only active gasoline credit card. I had other gas cards, but they were all closed for inactivity. I remember the Shell card being converted to a co-branded Shell/Chase MasterCard. After a while, something happened to the agreement between Chase and Shell and the card became a card only with the Chase name and is now a Chase Visa Freedom card. I never bothered to apply for any future Shell cards (they're now issued by Citibank). Edited May 22 by Burgerwars MP80
