Is payment technology convincing you to over-tip?

 

It's not convincing me. I've said it before. Turning an iPAD in my direction, with you watching is not going to guilt trip me into changing my practices of how I tip.

Add me to the tipping fatigue crowd.  It has gotten out of control.  Our trip to a high end restaurant for a dual birthday dinner with a server that went above and beyond to make it a special evening and wonderful meal garnered a 30% gratuity.  Asking me for a 25% tip because you sliced a bagel and dropped it in a bag and handed it to me is going too far.  Don't even get me started on the "fees" being added on by some businesses.  In California restaurants have started tacking on a 3-5% fee for employee health coverage and hotels are adding a $5 charge for the employee safety devices a recently passed law required them to buy.  Nope.  Nope.  Nope.  I have to pay for my health insurance out of pocket I am not paying for a server's too and you don't provide housekeeping anymore but I can come to the desk for clean towels if I need them.  Yet you want me to pay for their safety?  Nope. Nope.  Nope.

I just don't tip in those situations where all they do is hand me the sandwich at the airport for example. Knowing a tip was auto tagged on for health care is just fine by me.

The tip is not auto-tagged on for health care.  The ticket reads all the items ordered, then the taxes, the health care fee and they still expect a tip on top off all of that.  That is the problem.  Demanding a 20% or more gratuity and I pay your healthcare along with mine?  NOT going to happen.

I agree and already said that. I said, "I just don't tip". Which means, I don't tip twice in those situations.

Starbucks recently started giving the option for tips. Through the drive-thru, no less. NOPE.

 

A restaurant I was at two weeks ago, had two places on the check for tips. One for wait staff, and one for kitchen staff. I'm like perfect, the waitress could barely fog up a mirror. So the tip went to the kitchen, because the food aspect of the meal was perfect.

 

The COVID supplies fees I saw during the pandemic, always gave me a chuckle.

 

I've only ran into the healthcare fee once so far. I adjusted my tip accordingly. The fee was 3%. So instead of giving 20%, I gave 17%.

 

The restaurant owners are in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Do I raise, the price of everything on the menu, and bake in all the costs into the food, or do I itemize the customer check? Customer perception on this varies, from one person to the next.

They've really nailed this one; they've tapped into my huge anxiety that arises every time I'm confronted with a card reader or tablet that asks me to tip when I would never have thought of doing so before.  Imagine my trauma:

 

"OMG, the signature panel has a tip option!  I don't normally tip here; why is it asking me to tip???  But the clerk is watching me closely; god knows what there reaction is if I don't at least tap on the 10% option!  Oh, why did I even get out of bed this morning??!"

 

Or could it be that I click on "no tip", sign, and move on, none the worse for wear ...

 

Thank god Fox has stepped into the breach with an article telling me who I should tip and how to calculate the tip.   If only one day they'll tell me how to tie my shoes without having to bend over (I know that's got to be a challenge for the average Fox watcher ...)

I may pay with a CC, but I always tip in cash. Too many chains are cutting themselves in.

My nail salon has a sign to tip in cash when using a credit card. I often wonder why they ask this.

They do this for two reasons:  they are charged the fee by VISA/MC/DISC for accepting the card on the entire amount processed and they have to pay the tips in cash at the end of every day to the workers.  By paying in cash they avoid the fees and possibly not having the cash on hand to payout.   Last:  the cash can stay under the table and is under reported by the tip earners.

Cash tipping in many venues cuts the server a good break.  Many establishments (I've been led to believe) aren't required to have servers self-report cash tips.  Instead cash tip income may be imputed on actual charge receipts (something like 10%-12%, which if they actually receive 18% is like getting another 1% or 2% "on the side")

I can't be guilt tripped. Certainly not by a NY magazine of all things.
