I discharged USAA about a year ago because they went full Nazi on requiring tax documents just to maintain a checking account.  They have called me a few times since I discharged them asking me to reconsider, but my response has always been to FOAD.

I did, however, keep my insurance with them.  I have sought quotes from other insurance companies and it always inevitably goes just like it did last week when I tried GEICO:

GEICO: "Sir, we can meet the coverage you currently have for $6,000 per year (I have an under-21 driver in the family).  How much is your current premium with your current company?"

Me: "$4,700 with USAA."

GEICO: "Oh, shiat!  You should have mentioned from the start you had USAA.  Nobody can ever meet their prices!"

Anyhow, I was bored and brother @hegemony has failed to offer me any new CC candidates, so I decided WTF and app'd a USAA CC.  Instant approval for $30k.  I've used the card several times so far and all seems well, though rewards leave a bit to be desired.  I'll go for a second one in a few months or so to get up to their maximum exposure.

Awoke from a fitful sleep and decided to peruse CB to calm my mind ... this was the first post that hit my eyes and the phrase "discharged USAA" was initially interpreted as "discharged USAA in bankruptcy".

Whoa ... Wha??!  😲

Fortunately, or not, no BK for USAA.

Love USAA auto insurance and life for that matter.

Can you still not get insurance with them after IIB? I miss their rates...

I could be wrong, but I think you can.  IIRC, though, they may not allow online access for a while, but that isn't really so bad considering the savings you get on insurance.  For the $1,300 I am saving, I wouldn't care if everything with them was by carrier pigeon.

FWIW, you might also want to run a comparison with AIG...I got pointed to them when I was contemplating the 7spd Aston AMG and then, later, the Lotus.  Their quote for the six vehicles was about what I was paying on one policy for the three daily drivers.  I also have another policy for the three with limited mileage but stated value...and whose claims experience was exquisite when the XK8 was hit...and where the combined annual premium was still in triple digits.

I did not make the jump to AIG, but they gave a very reasonable number...

Just got a quote online. They let me login. Their quote was $600/yr higher than my current Farmer's policy.

Unfortunately, the extent of our relationship was a one-night-stand.  😢

Then next thing I know you are all over her like white on rice.  I'm guessing your real safe word is "More, baby, more!"

I tried Farmer's also and it was about the same until I plugged in a $50 deductible like I have with USAA.  Then it shot up like a rocket.

I’m seeing a few USAA old timers leaving the insurance for lower rates elsewhere….

I’m tempted to apply but I’m new account and inq heavy at the moment

USAA doesn't seem to be INQ or new account sensitive.

The people I have seen leave USAA insurance are those who want to save money by having a sky-high deductible and the absolute minimum coverage.

One colleague was bragging how his insurance is something like $900 per year with State Farm.  When I asked about his coverage he said it was $15k / $30k with a $2,500 deductible.  It takes a special kind of brain damage to go for 15/30 & 2.5k.  I wouldn't accept that coverage for a bicycle.  Needless to say, I relieved him of his duties as OIC of the armory and assigned him to supervise potato counting in the mess hall.

Are you rolling with max coverage $300/500k?

Yes.

I have max coverage on everything and a deductible of $50.  Also, my insurance bill also covers homeowners insurance and personal valuable property (or whatever they call it) insurance.

But the reason my premium is so expensive is because my youngest son is 20. That almost triples the premium.

I just confirmed:  300/500 w/ $50 deductible.  Premium is $4,000 per year.  If I remove my youngest son, it should drop much more than 1/2.  I'll call them tomorrow to find out exactly how much.

I think a lot also depends on ZIP Code.  San Diego might be expensive.

Well maybe they do better with younger drivers?

Deductibles are for suckers! What's the difference between a $50 and $500 when the car is worth $150k?

I don't want to be paying an extra $1,000 per year when someone scratches the car, for the occasional fender bender or when some slum rat throws stones off the overpass.

Tomorrow I will ask about the premium if I raised the deductible.

Amen, brother!

Last I priced a $500 deductible vs $1000, the point at which the lower deductible becomes advantageous was the scenario where I filed a claim at least once every 2.5 years.

In any case, auto insurance is all about the liability; collision coverage is incidental (relative to the protection liability coverage provides).

Definitely agree that insurance is all about liability and the odds of having a claim.

While I haven't had a claim in decades and the odds are quite low that I will have one, I prefer to play it safe.  Only a sucker goes into battle with a loaded standard issued gun.  A wise man goes into battle with ten, and an extra 2,000 rounds of ammo.

Ok, I just spent about an hour with my USAA insurance advisor and actually learned a lot.

If you have what they call an inexperienced driver on your policy, basically you will get FITA.  My youngest son is 20 and our premium for $300k / $500k is $2,000 every six months.  Our deductible is $50.

If I increase coverage to $1m / $1m, my premium goes up $150 every six months. If I drop limits to $15k / $30k, my premium drops $170 every six months.

If I remove my son and keep everything else exactly the same. My new premium is $890 every six months.  If I increase the deductible to $500, the premium is $650.  To $1,000 it is $575.

Another factor which I am not considering is how many miles you estimate you will put on the car every year.  Also, the type of car you have.  Our mileage is about 10,000 and the car is a 2022 Civic.  Other cars may have higher premiums and if you have higher mileage your premium will be higher.
