Discover Foiled My AZEO Plans

When my statement cut a few days ago I had a pending restaurant charge for $12.  Couldn't make a payment because my balance was zero.  My statement came out the next day with a $0.00 balance, but Discover told Experian and friends that I had a balance of $12.

Lesson learned.

By using Discover I got 60¢ cashback since restaurants are the 5% bonus category this quarter.  That's 36¢ more than I would have received if I had pulled out my 2% Citi card which would have given me only 24¢.

I think I'm tired of chasing pennies.

You can always "push" a payment to Discover from your bank's bill pay system.  Discover will accept and apply the payment even if the card shows $0 due.

Likely would not have processed in time since they said the meal amount was 'pending' as statement cut date neared...a push can often take three or four days.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I guess I am a bit spoiled, in my "pushed" payments process the next business day, even with Discover.

While I'm not pushing for AZEO, I'm trying to get my reported balances down from a typical 14+ (incl 5 installment loan related balances).  My remedy for accounts that I wish to use up to the statement date is to pay off activity each month, plus an added amount, to the extent permitted.  Most issuers permit a payment in excess of the outstanding balance of something like 5-7%.  That is sufficient leeway to cover most any added activity between payment and the statement cut.

I'd probably feel the same way if I only paid for one $12 restaurant meal in the third quarter.

Right now $12 gets you two items from the Wendy's Value Menu.

Yea, Discover got me this month as well.  I paid it off in full (as usual) but put $1550 on it a day or two after the bill was due.  Figured it would be pending for a few days so no big deal.  Nope, they reported a $1550 balance this month.  The point to the charge was to pick up the 5% cash back on gym stuff this quarter.  Got my $75 but it dropped my scores 7 or 8 points in the process.  Guess I'll know better to do that again early in the billing cycle, lol.

Thread prompted me to say a modest prayer of thanks that I closed on my mortgage refi in January and have been able to wipe my hands of AZEO ... what a frick'in pain in the butt!

While my mortgage FICO's have skated on ice that's 10-30 points thicker than 740, and so I managed them carefully in the short run, my FICO 8's are uniformly 800+ and only suffer modestly when I let 10 (or even 15) accounts report balances.

So I get that new/rebuilding credits with FICO 8's approaching/near 720 can't exactly let their hair down.  For your sake, just don't let AZEO become an obsessive habit from which you don't allow yourself to grow out ;)

It will go back up this month.  I just paid the bill yesterday, did it thru my bank this time instead of their website.  I have a couple hundred pending plus another $550 that may post about the time it's due.  I just added the pending plus the $550 to the payment yesterday.  The balance will post as $0.00 on my reports this month.  No harm, no foul.
