HSBC Gold MasterCard

I just got a pre-approval in today's snail mail. Has anyone had any experience with this card? Do they give decent credit limits?  Thoughts? Opinions?

 

Also, I had an HSBC toy card IIB a little over a decade ago. Are they as unforgiving as Chase?

I’ve heard they are stingy with credit limits unless you get their Premier World Elite card. I am doubtful that your previous experience with them would come up due to how long ago it was and the fact that they have changed their card portfolio several times.

are you rebuilding? if not, find something that serves your spending patterns. rebuilding the standard issue hsbc cards can be just fine but don't expect a lot in terms of limits.

Thankfully, I'm past the rebuilding stage, with a score in the high 700s and and a portfolio of decent revolvers.

 

From everything I've been able to find, the HSBC Gold doesn't seem to have a lot going for it.

I guess it depends on how you define stingy.  I got their normal rewards card with a starting limit of $25k.  Later on I added their Premier card at $30k.  Now I'm up to $35k / $50k.  I think their maximum exposure is $100k.

 

What is good about HSBC is that they don't give a rat's ass about inquiries.  I had like 20 at the time. They like to see you have a banking relationship.  Not sure about baddies.  I think their pre-approvals are solid, but they don't give instant decisions.  Each time it took them a day or two on mine and also on wife and son's.  
 

If you do end up with an HSBC credit card, the last thing you ever want to do is have to call and deal with their card security / address change team.  They are totally FUBAR.  It's all handled by raterdad Neanderthals who speak English about as well as I speak Hindi.

Yeah ... FTF and secondary rental coverage benefits don't exactly set it at the apex of someone's "most wanted" list.  Frankly, it sounds like you're at the point where a "pre-approved" solicitation is just slightly better than junk mail.  Have some self-respect!
