I thought I felt bad last week when I heard. I was wrong. That was nothing compared to having to watch a bunch of good people sign for their last check, clean out lockers, shake hands and try to put up a good front. I know for some of them, the odds of finding anything else will be like winning the lottery.
 

I hope no one else has this come your way. It sucks. It really just sucks.

Not sure what is worse - losing your job or being one of the few left behind. Looking for a job after age 50 stinks, I know I was there last year. Ageism is the last form of discrimination that employers still maintain.

Absolutely. Ageism is very real it puts intense pressure on people even as young as 40 to constantly learn new technologies, invest in training, and work twice as hard as the person in their 30's. Right out of the gate, people look down on you and already decided they will not hire you unless you can show your better then a 30 year old candidate, and that is a very tough thing to do. 

 

We need to contain covid-19, but these actions (shelter in place, non-essential business closings, etc) come at a very high cost to the economy. I hope we can find some way to start getting the economy up and running again, even if only in limited amounts to avoid a deep recession from which those most vulnerable will never recover.

+1  I don’t ever want to have to go looking again. Had to quit my last job 6 months ago. I put off leaving years longer than I should have for this very reason. I could walk circles around any 30 year old in my field but couldn’t get my foot in the door to do it. Some very creative cover letters got me a few crappy keep busy til something better comes up jobs for about 4 months. Lucked into this job with a little who you know and blunt honesty. 20% pay cut from where I was and no benefits hurts but I feel incredibly fortunate to have landed a decent job at 50+ with decent people. 
 

Helped a few of the older guys and functional illiterates file for unemployment today. They were all in good spirits and thinking this is just temporary. A “nice long paid vacation” is what one said. 
 

Got the word from the owners today that I’m “not allowed” to go anywhere come hell or high water. Nice to be a valued old fart for a change 🙃

Ladies and gentlemen, I know right now, many on this board are dealing with various employment issues, and my usual dark humor may not be warranted at the moment. BUT, take deep breath. Don't spend your sub prime cash reserves, or run up the cards, selling oils, candles, vitamins, cookware, or other shyt out of the trunks of your cars.

 

I genuinely feel blessed my day job is going well. On the other hand. My side job as Director Emeritus, over at the Velvet Jones School of Technology, a job I thought was depression proof has suffered. With 6ft social distancing in place, it's hard to do the job, when your arms are only 3ft long at best. I'm trying to treat my employees right though. I'm covering the health insurance for them 100% so the hand sanitizer keeps flowing with what business I have left. You know things are bad, when the fuzz can't justify a raid. It truly is hard out here for pimp.

With all the hoopla over the $1200/$2400/$500 OTP the part about the extra $600 weekly UI was overlooked. Indiana pays maximum $360 per week normally.

My employer this morning gave all employees a one time gift of 80 hours PTO. We can use it how we want.

 

My plan is to hoard it for more vacations in the future. I now have 403 hours of PTO.

Got a call today from one of our clients (billion $ company) asking if they could defer payment on several small jobs until October. Grand total of $17.2k due on 4/1. I’m pretty sure the lady heard me spit my coffee all over the monitor. Not a doubt she heard the “you’ve got to be xxxx xxxx kidding me!”

Word just came down. Suspended the requirement to use PTO, before being allowed to take time off without pay.

I've been surprised we have had no calls yet from people wanting us to keep working for no money...we did have one newish client who almost backed out and then decided that they would put the fee on the credit card and deal with the bank if the bottom fell out for them. 

 

I do have concerns about release practices in the coming weeks...there is a valid argument to be made that the public is better served by NOT releasing people who 1) have a huge potential of relapse, 2) are not apt to be employable when layoffs and furloughs are going on all over the place, 3) oilfield work ceases to exist at the current price points, and 4) who are not apt to be eligible for the stimulus checks.  Everything combines to create a very real potential of an increase in criminality.
