Medical bill Collection Call, wrong address, etc

Recommended Posts

New to the boards.  I got a call from a bill collector for a medical debt.  They didn't have my correct mailing address (it went to my ex's new home address instead of mine!)  I never got anything form the doctor office etc.  Now, I found out due to a phone call so the bill collector updated my address and sent me a letter.  I wanted to ask what should I do to insure this doesn't show up on my credit report. I know there are new laws such as the medical dept protection act etc.  I haven't seen any letter that suits my situation unless I am wrong?  Can someone please tell me the best steps to take here?

Welcome to Creditboards!

We hope that you find what you're looking for here.

Some helpful tips:

  • Your post may not get a reply right away. Don't be discouraged, this is a very busy board. If it falls off of the first page, feel free to reply to your post yourself, with the word *bump* in the text. This will *bump* your post back up to the top of the board.
  • If you haven't yet, take a peek at out Newbies Section. Everything that you need to know is in that forum, for the most part. It's a lot of reading, we know, but this credit stuff can have a steep learning curve. In no time, you'll be posting like the pros!
  • If you find that someone is discourteous to you, use the REPORT button at the top right of every post - that will ensure that a moderator or admin looks at the post and decides if it is against the TOS.
  • Off -topic posts should go in the General Forum.

Again, welcome to the CreditBoards family!

What is the date of the medical service?

If it is more than 2 years ago-it is likely not from the original health care provider.

Were you covered with insurance at the time?

If so, try to get your EOMB ( explanation of medical benefits)

Follow the guides;

Your first step after opting out and deleting old addresses is to send each CRA where this (or any medical account) is reporting this;

If it is NOT reporting send the CA this;
