Welcome to Creditboards!

We hope that you find what you're looking for here.

Some helpful tips:

  • Your post may not get a reply right away. Don't be discouraged, this is a very busy board. If it falls off of the first page, feel free to reply to your post yourself, with the word *bump* in the text. This will *bump* your post back up to the top of the board.
  • If you haven't yet, take a peek at out Newbies Section. Everything that you need to know is in that forum, for the most part. It's a lot of reading, we know, but this credit stuff can have a steep learning curve. In no time, you'll be posting like the pros!
  • If you find that someone is discourteous to you, use the REPORT button at the top right of every post - that will ensure that a moderator or admin looks at the post and decides if it is against the TOS.
  • Off -topic posts should go in the General Forum.

Again, welcome to the CreditBoards family!

I think I am a victim of identity theft and put a fraud alert on my credit report. I also put a security freeze. My paper report arrived in mail and it says: RECVD FROM PSL FRAUD 3RD PARTY. What does that mean?

1) which bureau provided the paper report on which you are seeing the line item

2) how did you go about the fraud alert placement

Yes, both questions are relevant.

RECVD FROM PSL FRAUD 3RD PARTY. is listed on my Equifax paper report. In addition today I got a notification alert through Experian Monitoring that they have added as well. I did not place a fraud alert, it was just there after I wrote requesting my Equifax paper report.

If you did what I highlighted in red, then that fraud alert will propagate to all of your credit files with the 4 major bureaus.

Oh, okay I didn't know that. I did put a fraud alert on the monitoring service that I was provided as a result of a breech . That is Experian. I don't really understand how this works. I put a freeze and fraud alert on one report through that monitoring web site run by Experian. This alert has appeared on Equifax.

Mere speculation:  Sounds like you entered a dispute with a creditor that the creditor interpreted as a "not mine" dispute -- i.e. someone fraudulently charged against your account.  They've, in turn, are notifying the CRA's via a fraud alert.  Is this consistent with any recent action on your part?

There was an attempt to breach my bank account in November 2019. Checking, Savings, Brokerage and Credit card, Mortgage and an auto loan all at that institution. The Bank contacted me and asked me to come into a branch with my SS card and Government ID. When I did they advised me of the attempted breach and advised me to report it (they said they were also making appropriate reports). They changed all of my account numbers and added their highest level of security. I agreed to inconvenience in return for much safer accounts!

Maybe your speculation is correct and the Bank reported to the credit bureaus?

This just came up on another paper copy report which I received in the mail today:

Date ############ ID SECURITY ALERT: FRAUDULENT APPLICATIONS MAY BE SUBMITTED IN MY NAME OR MY IDENTITY MAY HAVE BEEN USED WITHOUT MY CONSENT TO FRAUDULENTLY OBTAIN GOODS OR SERVICES. DO NOT EXTEND CREDIT WITHOUT FIRST VERIFYING THE IDENTITY OF THE APPLICANT. I CAN BE REACHED AT my area-myphone number.  THIS SECURITY ALERT WILL BE MAINTAINED FOR 1 YEAR BEGINNING XX-XX-XX.

All of that is good. You want any potential creditor that pulls reports to be extra careful in verifying that it's really you who are applying for credit.

You might also consider freezing your reports at each of the CRAs. This makes it impossible for a new creditor to pull a report w/o you unfreezing the CRA first. They provide PINs for you to do that. A few years ago the rules were changed and now you no longer need evidence of fraud to freeze reports. And there is no longer a charge for doing it.

That's normal like I said.   It will shortly be on all your bureaus.

Thank you everyone for your responses. This is scary stuff and I feel a little better knowing what's going on. Unfortunately, I have been told this may not be the end of this saga so I am glad Credit Boards is here.
