Woman reportedly leaves $5,000 tip on boyfriend's credit card because she was mad at him

Recommended Posts

There's so much wrong on the restaurant end of this transaction it's laughable.  I realize that ID check isn't appropriate, but it's apparent that we're not talking AU here.  The likely sex mismatch between card and presenter was good cause to suspect the tip wouldn't "stick".

Of course, I guess "chipped" cards relieve merchants of any responsibility of flagging a suspicious transaction these days?

Not to me ... just sounds like he place a hold on any charges to the card.  Can you be liable for grand theft for use of an AU card because the cardholder said you're not to use it anymore, but left the card open for use?

Dispute the charge. I bet once this is sorted out, the waitress won't get that "$5,000 tip."

With huge tips, I think restaurants are required to run that through as a separate charge. I would think that would ring up some sort of fraud alert with the credit card issuer.

I agree, my cell phone would be ringing before the ink was dry on the signature line.  The bank would be asking if I just made a charge for $5,060 at a cafe and I would be like "is this a joke?"

If I use my Venture card and God forbid leave more than a 20% tip, I get an e-mail from Cap One asking "Did you mean to be this generous?"

I think a $5,000 tip would of shut all the lights out!

See, maybe this isn't accepted practice in the restaurant biz (I've never worked at one : / ) but if I saw a tip that ridiculous and had no way of contacting the customer, I would just not put it through.  Charge the price of the meal, sigh that the customer was weird like this and  no tip for me, and live another day.

Only way I can see a theft charge was if the card wasn't in her name (in which case, why did the restaurant accept the card? ... of course, his name could be something like "Avery" or "Dana", I guess)

If she's an authorized user and the card she used was hers, I do not see fraud, either.

We ate lunch on Sunday at some shitty chain BBQ restaurant, where you pay by inserting your card into a device at the table.

It was decent of our server to note that it was ridiculous that they charge $3.19 for fountain club soda, so she comped that.  We tipped well, but not $5k.
