Teen Account Went Bad, Now What

Recommended Posts

Okay. . This is a weird situation. When I was 16 years old, my mom had me open a joint checking account with her with a credit union. Somehow, the account went bad and they removed my mom from the account, but I just received a call after 4 years that I owe $3000 from the account. My question is this. Do I owe this money even though I was a minor at the time and closed the account within a month of turning 18? I never signed an application as an adult. I am in Ohio

Far more information is needed to address the issue.  However, it is information that should not be in the public forums, etched into the perpetuity of the interwebs.

As you reference it being a credit union, have you gone in and sat down with a CU officer to discuss the issue?  If not, do so.  The next step, if resolution cannot be had is to determine whether they are governed at the State level or by federal-level officials.  You would then pose the question in written form (not email and not by fax) to them.  Be forewarned that by going through these avenues, you will necessarily need to throw mom under the bus...but she is the one that put you in this situation (unless *you* bounced the $3K in checks in the short period of time you were an adult and had control of the account).

bakes1313 - As posted above, we need more info.

1)  Did you use the account?  Debit card, checks?

2)  What is the city and state where the account was opened?

3)  What is the month and year the account was opened?
